No.. its a very expensive case, you can use the $ for other stuff... also your raptor is the old 8mb version.. theres a newer 16mb version.

This looks like a pc for game, not art.. especially the sli... depending on what you're actually running, the quadro cards may be better for "art" projects.. i haven't seen photoshop support for sli yet

I would even wait till the 50% price cut for am2.. looks like you missed that news bulletin..

only if you want to future proof your machine for the next year and use the latest proc... of course you do need an am2 mobo

I said next year, ie, am2 is out, its at month 1 of its life, by end 6/19/2007, thats one year, and im sure am2 is still the socket of next year. If i say get a 939 right now, at the end of 939 life, then you're correct and I'm wrong

http://images.dailytech.com/nimage/1779_large_full_pricing.png - according to various sources, july 24, you can get the x2 5000 for around 403.. so if you're willing to wait, you can have a faster proc for less price. only 1 month away..

I hate fanboys.

EDIT: take your god damned smiley... ;)

EDIT2: I actually didn't want the smiley, but some people are traumatized by the lack of smiley.

Wait for the AM2 price cuts, you know it makes sense. On your other questions:

psu - ocz powerstream 520w - i'm not too sure if it can handle sli
It can, a good PSU by all acounts, i'd get a seasonic s12 instead but that's because i like low noise PSUs.

mobo - dfi lanparty ut nf4 sli-dr
processor - amd athlon 64 x2 4400+ - i really want a dual core so i guess i'll stick with this
As said wait for AM2 if possible, if not then don't get the 4400X2, the extra cache doesn't help in 95% of applications. The same will probably be true of the AM2 lineup although i'm not up to speed with the naming system.

heatsink fan - i'm leaning toward to thermalright xp-90c but is it solid for 4400+? if i pick this then i'll need a fan controller.
It's a good heatsink, but i'd go for a SI 120 with a yate loon 1200RMP 120mm fan instead, quiet to incredibly quiet depending on fan speed, also don't forget you can use the motherboard to control the fan speed.

memory - g.skill 2x1gb ddr400 - is 2gb enough?
2GB is perfect.

video card - bfg geforce 7900gt - i'll order for two for sli but is 7900gt enough?
Hell yes, a single 7900GT is around the most you can really justify for a 1280x1024 screen (you didn't say what you're using), two of them is very high end.

primary hard drive - raptor 74gb or save $$$ by going with wd 80gb sata2...
Raptors are nice, but they are a poor value for money option, this is the first place to save money.

secondary hard drive - i'm thinking about wd 320gb sata but do i really need sata2? this drive is for storage such as programs, videos and etc.
If you want to save cash just get a single larger HD for all of it, there are lots of advantages to seperate HDs, but it doesn't seem that you know enough or would be using them in a manner to take advantage of them. (no offense meant). SATAII is marketing bull, the fastest SATA drive is the raptor, a SATAI drive.

dvd drive - i'm looking for a better slot-loading dvd drive.
dvd burner - nec nd-3550a i've owned previous model, 3540a and it serves me really well.
I've few complaints about my 3550b, although it has started overheating recently (very odd)

How dare you read the OP :| ;)

It's not possible to just make do with your current system for the short term? More hastle in terms of shipping but it would save you a notable amount of cash.

i'm an AMD fan so therefore i'm going to build a new rig with AMD processor in it.

here's my list and if you want to suggest some feedbacks so be it. i'm always flexible and i'll try to find parts that are very reliablity.

case - i want a case with mobo on the left side and psu on the bottom.
psu - ocz powerstream 520w - i'm not too sure if it can handle sli
mobo - dfi lanparty ut nf4 sli-dr
processor - amd athlon 64 x2 4400+ - i really want a dual core so i guess i'll stick with this
heatsink fan - i'm leaning toward to thermalright xp-90c but is it solid for 4400+? if i pick this then i'll need a fan controller.
memory - g.skill 2x1gb ddr400 - is 2gb enough?
video card - bfg geforce 7900gt - i'll order for two for sli but is 7900gt enough? OR i'd go with single 7900gtx 512mb instead?
primary hard drive - raptor 74gb or save $$$ by going with wd 80gb sata2...
secondary hard drive - i'm thinking about wd 320gb sata but do i really need sata2? this drive is for storage such as programs, videos and etc.

dvd burner - nec nd-3550a i've owned previous model, 3540a and it serves me really well.

that's so far i've.

and the total might be around $2,000...

of course, all of them are from newegg. but the problem is that it is overpriced. so i can't help myself to find better parts to reduce the price. so i'm here to search for your help. i hope you can help!

i'll truly appreciate it!

p.s. i'll not take out parts from my current gaming rig. i'll just leave it at home and have myself a new computer at college. i'll need it by end of next week for summer school.

edit: or just throw in a new list which could be very reliable for me.

get a cheaper cpu. x2 3800+
since your getting a dfi lanparty i assume you will OC so get the cheapest and OC that.
if your over budget get a nice 300 (or 80 you suggested but 300 gb drives cost around 70 so i'd get that) gb hdd instead of the raptor.
instead of 7900gt sli get a x1900xt. better IQ and lower price. less hassles too.

dfi mobo's are great for OCing but the non-OC crowd should stay away. there not that great (as an owner i know.)
and i don't talk to fanboys. BRAND loyalty is the stupidest thing and if you wanna go for a brand rather than a product then..........well i guess i just can't relate to ppl like you.

I think AM2 is the way to go right now, even if you can't wait a month for prices to drop. I would ditch the 4400+ in favor of the 3800+, since you'll be able to get something way faster than a 4400+ (for the same price) once the 3800+ is a bottleneck somewhere WAY down the road.

Stay away from the DFI if you're not overclocking. ASUS, Abit, Gigabyte - I've had great luck with all 3. I'm not familiar with any AM2 mobos yet or I'd list models.

7900GT is good times, especially for the $250 eVGA you can get on newegg. SLI is only sweet if you have a monitor with very high resolutions. 1280x1024 will be awesome with a single 7900GT on just about any game.

Agree that raptor isn't a good choice - get a 320GB western digital sata and call it good.

If you're getting a single video card, then I'd really recommend this case/PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129155 -- Easy build, decent PSU, very quiet and great look. I've built 2 rigs with them and have been stoked.
Otherwise the Seasonic would likely be a step up from the OCZ.

The 'art' computers that the college i work at purchase are single xeon with a quadra 4 and 2 gig of ram. we run video editing, adobe photo suits and Catia on them with our only lags being paging and network licencing. A friend of mine goes to FullSail (an art trade school) and ive seen a quadra 4 running premiere vs a 6800gt and the quadra 4 way outperforms. The rest of the hardware was pretty similar on thoes two setups. Though when it comes to games ive seen both running WOW and the 6800 was better. right tool for the job i suppose.

i just want to go with both gaming and multi-tasking. but i'll just go with gaming and maybe some light multi-tasking so i'll upgrade later for some serious multi-tasking.

these are teh parts i want but it's way too pricey. i'm trying to narrow the cost so i could spend money wisely.
