Hi guys, I'm looking to build a new computer so I can finally play some -real- games over the summer break. It has been a long time since I last built one and your help in this matter will be much appreciated.

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

Gaming !
Gaming while having lots of apps running(firefox with 30 tabs open, microsoft word, irc client, media player, eclipse IDE and maybe an http server or two).

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

My budget is up to 1000 USD (including monitor) and preferably the parts will be purchased by the end of next week.

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

Location is Oahu (main island of Hawaii) but about 2.5 hours away from Honolulu. Planning to buy it through newegg or amazon, recomendation for alternative would be welcome e.g. if anyone knows a great brick and mortar computer shop in Oahu.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference.

I am an AMD/ATI fanboi.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

I do have some parts that I would prefer to use to minimize the cost :

Several week ago I bought a Mini-tower Dell Optiplex 755 with Q6600 (2.4Ghz) and has 2GB of DDR2 RAM for just 50 bucks. I understand that upgrading the PSU and RAM is imperative if I were to continue using the box as main gaming rig. An upgrade of the case might also be required (from researching in the internet, only 1-slot graphic card can fit in it). Another option would be to just use this thing for linux and build everything for scratch. I dont know if Q6600 would bottleneck current crop of games tho.

A slow WD Green Caviar 1.5 TB hard drive but I will need another hard drive, I am thinking of a Samsung 1 TB Spinpoint F3.

I will need to also buy a monitor, I am currently using my friend's and he is going to sell it soon. The total height of the monitor cannot be more than 17 inches due to space concern.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Some moderate overclocking (around 20%) to maximize performance for the same amount of bucks spent would be awesome but not critical.

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

The native resolution of the monitor you recommend.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

Planning to order it between Monday to Friday next week.

There you go guys ! Thanks in advance !!

PS
At this point gaming performance is not as critical as having a great monitor that fit my tiny desk. I can do upgrades later on.

PPS
I usually play RPG games. Strategy games from Paradox are also my thing. I play FPS from time to time. I have just read a bit about bit coin mining so if its a real deal then I would be interested.

Since you have $1K to play with, I don't see any reason to try to upgrade the Dell. Also, the 17" height restriction on the monitor won't be an issue as long as you get one with a height-adjustable stand. For reference, my 24" Dell can go down to 16" or so if I lower it all the way.

With that out of the way, let's get to the parts!

i5 2500 + Biostar TZ68A+ $302
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $74
6870 $160 AR
Samsung F3 1TB $50 AP
LG DVD Burner $19
Antec HCG 400W $40 AR
Antec Three Hundred $60
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $100
NEC E-231W-BK $210
Total: $1015 AR AP

Thanks for the reply mfenn. I notice you help a lot of member in this forum, much appreciated !

You have a solid recommendation there, but it'd be great if some tinkering can be done.
I would like to buy AMD cpu and if possible, the cpu and mobo combo should not exceed 200 usd while at the same time not being a bottleneck to a 6950 card at 1920 x 1080 resolution. As mentioned, I am AMD fanboi and want them to survive.

Most times, the computer will only be used for general computing (reading pdf, browsing, listening to music, youtube, etc). So performance is not -that- critical. Only when I am gaming do I need some firepower.

That said I would like to spend more on a great monitor (up to 300 usd), good casing ( up to around 100 usd ), solid 500w PSU (up to 50 - 100 usd) and a set of ergonomic keyboard and mouse (up to 100 usd). From my experience, they tend to be always useful, not just when I am gaming, and have a very good longevity especially compared to cpu / graphic card.

I will not require an OS or a DVD.

Thanks again !

Edit:
100 - 200 usd overbudget is fine.

If you want to invest more on a keyboard, I highly recommend a mechanical keyboard. MUCH better than those ripoff "ergo" keyboards that are the same crappy rubber dome underneath, especially for game like BW or SC2 (high chance of you playing those, given your name :p)

Oh, and mfenn's build is epic, highly suggest it.

Do not get AMD just dont. At least not until bulldozer.

 Agree with both.

OP, since you don't need an OS or DVD burner, just take those out and spend the $119 on whatever mouse and keyboard you like.

As for the other parts I suggested, I would not touch them at all. The case, PSU, and monitor are all top quality at a reasonable price. The AMD CPUs in your price range simply do not make sense right now.

Alright so I am taking out the DVD and OS. I am changing to case to one which I think looks much better. Adding keyboard and maybe a mouse later on.

Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 $19
Antec HCG 400W $55Samsung F3 1TB $60
G.Skill DDR3 1333 8GB $74
http://detonator.dynamitedata.com/c...t/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.658257Cooler Master Storm Enforcer $80
6870 $180
NEC E-231W-BK $210
i5 2500 + Biostar TZ68A+ $302

Newegg's calculation :
Subtotal: $979.91
Shipping: $139.82
Grand Total: $1,109.73

Right now I am trying to find :
1. reliable and slightly more powerful PSU (450 - 550 ) within the same price range
2. A cheaper CPU + Mobo combination. The main thing is to not bottleneck the graphic card. If I could save enough money then the graphic card may even be changed to a 6950.

Probably gonna have to use Newegg's preferred account or Bill Me Later but I can pay it back in one week or three at most.

Substitute in Enermax's Corsair CX600 clone for $29.99AR at newEgg now.
Would also suggest the following :

XFX 6950 1GB - $199.99AR
8GB PNY Optima DDR-1333 - $45AR
Samsung F1 1TB - $49

Third try at the build. It is almost Monday in Hawaii so it might also be the final one.
I originally wanted to allocate 700-800 usd and ended up with 1250.
Will have to sleep over it. Suggestions for fat trimming will be very welcome.

COOLER MASTER Storm Enforcer $80
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 $60
NEC Display Solution E231W-BK $210
HIS H687F1G2M $185
Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-520 520W $70
Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 $19
Logitech M505 Black $32
Sennheiser - Stereo Noise Cancelling Headphones (HD 428) $70
G.SKILL Value Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) $75
Intel Core i5-2500 + BIOSTAR TZ68A+ Combo $302

Subtotal: $1,100.89
Shipping: $147.79
Grand Total: $1,238.68

Looks like I am going to have to use either Newegg's Preferred Account or Bill Me Later. I hope there are no traps in there.

Just looking at your list, you have the i5-2500, not the i5-2500k. You need the i5-2500k to allow overclocking.

If you don't need overclocking, you could consider dropping down to a H67 motherboard.

Yeah, I suggested the 2500 because the K combo deals are pretty much crap right now.

All that stuff looks fine to me though I'm not sure what the deal is with worrying over the PSU. The 6870 simply does not use that much power. Now, if you think that your gaming tastes will change radically over the next couple of years, I can see getting a bigger one because your GPU requirement might increase. I honestly don't see the point given your game mix.

Oh yeah, and you can get the HD 428's cheaper at Amazon.

I turned off my lamps and climbed to bed last night. Then I was reminded of something. All this time I have been using rather plain computer cases, those without fancy LEDs. Since I intend to have my rig run 24/7 and it will sit just a couple feet away from my head, it cant be loud or shining with LEDs. I need my room to be almost completely dark or I wont be able to sleep.
Do these fancy cases have easily reachable switch to turn their LEDs off/on?
Its a deal breaker and I prolly have to go with a more ... mundane case.

- Changing PSU to Antec EarthWatts Green EA-430D $40
I read the anandtech's load consumption and saw the error of my ways. Thank you mfenn.
- I was looking around other people's build and see this
ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor for $180. which is $30 less than NEC Display Solution E231W-BK while being slightly larger.
Is the NEC price tag justified ?

PS
man, the turnover at newegg is really fast. One day they have the keyboard, and then they are no longer in stock. Then you find another one you like and next thing you know the hard drive is sold out...

Check out the Fractal design R3 for a "silent" case with no LED's most cases it is difficult to turn off ALL LED's

i don't think i've ever seen fan LEDs with switches on them. i've cut the wires off. most fans with LEDs on them are complete junk anyway.

The NEC is a slightly better panel, but I mostly picked it because it is height-adjustable (the ASUS is not) and you have a height-restriction. If you know somebody with the ASUS or can otherwise measure it, feel free to get it instead of the NEC.
