Hi
Probably going to be a long post...
I'm going to buy parts and build my new computer. First and most important, this computer will be used for audio. I will record live acoustice instruemnts with microphones and also create electronic music with virtual instruments. I'll also make music for movies, both acoustic and electronic.
I'm not going to play games at all on this computer.
Another important thing is, I'm not going to overclock!
Obviously, I will need the computer to be as quiet as possible since I'll recording in the same room, but I don't want to spend so much money on water cooling or antyhing like that. The recordings won't be professional so a little noise into the mic is ok (but just a little). The microphones I'll use are build in a way they capture a lpot of what is in front of them and very little from what is behind them, so I'll put the computer behind them of course.
Now for the parts. I managed to narrow it down to just a few options of each component. Also, prices here are more expensive than in the USA, and ordering form the USA will cost eventually more with the shipping and tax, so I'll list the prices we have here.
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 (or the 3200+ but will I notice much difference? Remember I'm not going to overclock). Does it matter if I get the Winchester, Venice or Newcastle?
Motherboard: So far I narrowd it down to these options:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum - $195
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - $200
Abit AV8 - $130
I noticed the MSI has a small fan while the Abit has a heatsink. I've had a MSI motherboard for five years without any problems, so I'm leaning to that, but if the fan is VERY noisy (maybe it's posible to replace it with a heatsink like a Zalman?) also the Abit is much cheaper, maybe the Abit is a better option after all.
Memory: (I'll get a total of 1GB, here are the prices for 512MB cards)
Kingston 512MB Value CL2.5 PC3200/400 - $90
Corsair 512MB Value CL2.5 PC3200/400 - $115
Corsair 512MB MSX CL2 Pc3200/400 - $135
Some memory cards seem to work on 2.75V, but the motherboards say they support 2.5V memory cards. Would I have any problems (I don't want to mess with the Voltage, just work on defult settings)?
Graphics card: Has to be fanless.
If I'm going with an AGP motherboard I'm probably going with Nvidia GeForce FX5200 by Gigabyte - $80
If I'm going with an PCI Express motherboard I'll go with Nvidia 6200 by Gigabyte - not sure about price.
Sound card: M-Audio Delta-44
Hard drives: Two SATA hard drives, either WD or Seagate.
WD 80GB SATA - $85
WD 120GB SATA - $110
Seagate 80GB SATA - $95
Seagate 120GB SATA - $120
DVD burner: NEC 3520A DVD±RW - $70
Power supply: HEC, Enermax or Thermaltake
HEC 400W - $70
HEC 475W - $85
Enermax 420W - $105
Thermaltake 420W - $80
Thermaltake 480W - $110
Case: Thought about Compucase, but Antec is an option too. Any case under $150 (or just slightly above that) is an option.
Any more advice on making the computer quiet without spending a lot of money will help too.
Thank you very much to everyone that reply.
