Why not get a motion-detecting light? The purpose of a light is for anyone to see where they're going right? Don't need it on all the time and the bugs won't all get there that quickly. Have had it for years.

Can of butane is probably more fun. You can get at least a 10ft flame out of it. :D
The shrapnel will also be metal, so it will be easier to find on an x-ray after the can explodes in your face.

And how exactly is the flame going to travel down the plastic straw and into the can, and lets just say I give you that it gets to the inside of the can, once it's in the can(lol), how is the flame going to somehow spontaneously cause the entire can to asplode into a metal shrapnel?

Kids these days...no common sense...
this sounds like a job for the mythbusters!

Uh, why don't you get a yellow bug light?

<--- Will weep for the future of man kind if nobody has pointed this out yet..

They even make CFL versions.

Hahahaha...

Realistically, though, that shouldn't ever happen. The flow of butane should prevent any flashback into the can.

You'd hope.

Yes, normally. But with the chances of anything, it can and has happened.

As others have pointed out a yellow light will cut back on the amount of nocturnal insects. They are attracted to blue and violet radiation and this is why an electronic insect lantern (the type with a black light bulb surrounded by a grid charged to about 4500VAC) has blacklight lamps to ATTRACT them! Never put such a lamp where you do NOT want bugs. Locate it about 40-60 feet away from your porch to draw them AWAY from your house.

My thinking is that there is no oxygen in the can, so there really shouldn't be any danger of explosion.
I think the stuff in the news awhile back about hairspray bottles exploding in such a fashion was because they used pump-action sprayers, which lets plain air into the bottle.

With a butane canister, it's just plain butane liquid and gas in the can, and the pressure inside would keep oxygen out. Result: no explosion.
