Buffalo WHR-G54S vs. WHR-HP-G54

I am in the market for a router after having tempted fate for a couple of years without one. I hear that Buffalo makes pretty good routers. I was looking at these two models on newegg and was wondering what the difference is between the two?

Also, while I'm at it, are either of these models a good choice for someone who knows very little about networking and routers and just wants one to keep my ports safe (or whatever)?

Thank you.

I'm sure Jack can chime in a little more but basically, the WHR-G54S is the starter level, has a heat sink and can use 3rd party firmware. If you're not covering a large distance, this is the one to go with. The WHR-HP-G54 has a built-in amplifier which pushes out a cleaner signal that will go farther, since there isn't as much strain going through the chipset, no heat sink is needed. If you need/want to cover a larger distance, this is the one to go with. Personally, considering the price difference on these, I'd say go with the WHR-HP-G54. Mine works flawless with dd-wrt firmware (more features than the stock but the stock works just fine if you don't want or need the extra features).

Thanks for the input. I ordered the WHR-HP-G54 so I'll probably be back next week with some questions when I invariably screw something up.

Good choice.

When you get it use it first without any flashing to make sure that evry thing is OK.

Do not Flash if you do not need an extra mode added by the 3rd party firmware.

The 3rd party firmware adds modes but it does not make the Router better in working if a Mode that is provided by the stock firmware is used.

I have the HP and I'm incredibly frustrated. I'm seeing drops every couple minutes from 10 feet away (through one floor) and from 30 feet away it can't connect. I've tried stock and dd-wrt firmware without any success. I got so frustrated that I ordered a second one from amazon just to compare and see if the first was faulty.

I would also try the device in another location to make sure that there is No unusual noise interaction that disturbs the Router.

Do not forget to make sure that the SSID is On, and anything related to Network Power Saving is Unchecked in the computers.
