As a bridge this would work with consoles like xbox for wireless instead of spending too much for something that says Xbox on it.

Good deal. An alternative would be the WRT54GL for $36.55AR+GCO shipped.

Linksys WRT54GL:

I've been thinking about getting one of these. And I could find a ~$10 item to bring the total over $50 and use the $20 off, so I'd get the $10 item for free (thinking a decent mousepad).

Can't you use these in a mode where it acts as a wireless card (client bridge or something like that)? So get two, use one as a wireless card...$70 for 125mbps compatibility... hard to beat.
 
Since you void the warranty by installing third-party firmware anyways, the 2-year vs. 3-year difference is largely irrelevant. Plus, I, personally, don't want to support the Linksys practice of neutering their mainstream product (going from rock-solid WRT54G V4 to the crash-happy V5) and then bringing the old mainstream product back as a premium unit (WRT54GL is simply the WRT54G V4). Disingenuous.

My order went through and shipped. I think I ordered it around 8pm CST yesterday.

 
Excellect router. I got 3 of these (2 for customers and 1 for myself). Loaded with dd-wrt firmware - they work great as a pair in a bridged WPA mode if you want to extend your wireless. Mine at home hasn't dropped me yet.
 
Sorry, can't help you with the torrents downloads. I am using a FreeBSD box as a firewall. Buffalo acts as an AP for my wireless laptop.

Yeah, pretty much all "low end" routers will drop if you have too many torrents going on. I highly recommend ipcop to act as a router, and it is super slick! However, these little routers make great APs.
 
bull all low end routers drop you with torrents.... my di-524 sucks for reception but doesnt drop when im bangin out torrents or mirc downloads....
 
i have this router and i have been torrenting without issues, although i am using a wired connection, but still way better than my WGT624 netgear
 
I picked up the WRT-54GL after reading through this thread. I had DD-WRT running on it 10 minutes after I unpacked it. The router I received was version 1.1, so I didn't even have to load the mini-ddwrt first.

Very nice router, a lot of menu options with the DD-WRT v23 and all at a very nice price.

There is another way to look at it - Everyone over the years has further integrated their product offerings and attempted to cut unnecessary costs whenever possible. This is what Linksys did with V5, same as everyone else was doing. Only difference is their V5 didn't turn out so good (but same can be said about other manufacturers' products too, from time to time).

So Linksys had already abandoned the more costly old design like (practically) everybody else, and by the same token, would debug their current version to get it working better rather than go backwards in technology to a larger footprint OS requiring more hardware to get the same job done. When it comes to a mission specific embedded device, the V5 should have been superior, just not tailored to what we would want to do, modify an open source OS.

So Linksys could have done like everybody else and just closed the door to modders, but instead recognized the interest, and rather than take extra measures to try to prevent it, offered a supportive product that reflects the higher cost of the hardware and the lower volume sales.

I only wish other manufacturers were as accomodating, the only fault I find with Linksys is they should've stuck with V4 until they'd fully debugged V5, not releasing it before it's ready.
