well here is the deal, i built me a gaming rig, and sold the old pc to help fund the project. i still have an old 733 p3 that was a compaq, but it has so many faults it's unheard of, not including the fact that i don't have any of the recovery cd's or anything for it. so yea...here is what i'm trying to build...a budget pc for 500ish bucks.

what i have-
monitor, keyboard, mice, win xp pro(legit copy, spare from retail edge), possibly able to reuse old cddrives, but at 30 bux for a new one, i don't mind spending the money for it.

what i need-
the rig...haha, mostly the hardware. yes i can piece together myself, but i'm not too sure about older mobo's/processors etc.

why-
wifey is tired of waiting to use the comp while i play WoW or BF2. :)

skt 754 sempron 2800
512mb of ram pc3200
motherboard with nvidia 6100 chipset (onboard video)
80gb sata hd, seagate 7200.9 would be good
antec slk3000b, the one with teh 300 or 350 watt psu for like 70$
dvd burner

should be well under 500

so this is for word processing, web browsing, etc. for the wife?
i don't see why this would have to consist of an older board/cpu...

CPU: 3200+ A64 ($160)
motherboard: i'm not sure but i would get one with onboard graphics (unless she plays some games)...try spending less than $90
RAM: G.Skill 1GB CL 2.5 stick ($72) or Corsair 1GB Value Select CL 3 stick ($69). timings don't help too much but whatever. it's your choice
HDD: Western Digital Caviar SE 160GB $77
Case: idk you could use the Cooler Master Centurion 5 but it looks more like a "guy" case to me...any preferences you think she has? it's $45 btw
PSU: fortron 400w ($40) or a small antec i would say.
Optical: $40...get it from BenQ, NEC, i think Lite-On is alright too

this comes to around $515. you could go cheaper on the case...get an 80gb hard drive..get a $75 or less mobo (i know there are some good ones with onboard video at this price, just don't know their names :p)...getting a 3000+ saves $15 too.

or, just show around. these prices are all from newegg

i would actually get the antec case/psu combo Cinna696 recommended. it'll reduce the cost of the build i made by $15, making it $507 i believe

Budget pc. Here you go.

Motherboard and Processor:
http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4705559?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Hard Drive:
http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4008222?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

The 2 Outpost purchases Hard drive, processor, motherboard will come to 147.00 dlvd.

Memory:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80098-21 $69.00

Optical Drive:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058 $38.00

Case and Power Supply:
http://tinyurl.com/eyfho --- $68.00

This totals around $325.00 without a video card.

My suggestion. Find a ti4200 that someone is selling on these boards. Will play Sims just fine. Can get a nice one for $35.00 delivered or you can splurge with a 9600pro or 9800 pro or 6600gt, or whatever. It will certainly be better than onboard video. But definitely buy the video card off the fs/ft forums. You will find many of them from good traders who are upgrading and have taken good care of their components

Add $15-20 for a heatsink/fan (Outpost says it is a bare cpu).

I really like the antec case, but is 350W enough juice, even if it is an antec? Just curious to listen to other people's experiences.

Thanks

i still think this is better:

CPU: 3200+ A64 ($160) (Socket 939)
MB: Gigabyte motherboard (Socket 939) w/GeForce 6100 built-in $70
RAM: Corsair 1GB Value Select CL 3 stick ($69).
HDD: Seagate 80GB $50
Case: Cooler Master Centurion 5 but it looks more like a "guy" case to me...any preferences you think she has? it's $45 btw
PSU: fortron 400w ($40) or a small antec i would say.
Optical: Lite-On DVD burner $40

all this for $485 and it's all from newegg (except the motherboard) so you can probably cut it down to $470 or less. and it's socket 939, 64-bit, the psu and case will last a good 2 or 3 builds...i think it's good for under $500
