I think you forgot the case and the power supply. (And the flat panel too since he was looking for it)

Leo did you bother to look at what i told him? It is a shuttle type SFF which includes the Case and PS thanks for the statement though. As for the monitor he can find one at Bestbuy or Samsclub.

OS not included. Actually, this is basically the same system I'm building for my dad next week. Socket 754 Semprons perform much better than their Socket A counterparts.

if worst comes to worst, I'm sure Dell has a complete system on their site that they could sell your friend for under $600, ;)

He could get a Dell laptop for $499 after rebate right now:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/....aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=iB120S1&s=dhs

or a desktop with 17" LCD for $399:
http://dealnews.com/deals/Dell-Dimensio...esktop-PC-w-17-LCD-for-399/102933.html

For a casual user, I don't you can build a better deal with new components.

EDIT:
neither has a DVD burner. External burners (for the laptop) aren't too expensive, and internal burners are dirt cheap. The laptop only has a 40GB drive, but he could always get an external drive when he needs it for relatively little $$$.
