Summary:
1. This PC will be used for serious gaming on a plasma TV and HD playback (camcorder videos) (with possible editing of AVCHD). Looking toward consistent future gaming

2. My budget is <$525 right now.

3. I live in the US

4. No preference for any brands, but have some ideas of what I want. Well, maybe I want G.Skill since my last set served me well. I also have a real strong preference for a durable psu (even if it dies, it won't kill the rest of my system)

5. I intend to reuse my mouse, keyboard, HD, and will buy a BD player later.

6. I've been reading similar threads for a while. My big problem is that I am looking for an inexpensive HTPC case that can house a radeon 4850 and an ATX board. There are others who seem to be looking for this as well. I don't want to do any modding

7. I am definitely interested in overclocking, but not by much. I want to keep the stock cooler.

8. I plan to build this ASAP. Within the week, if possible.

And although I will try for rebates, I am not counting on them (especially corsair)

Here's what I am looking at (newegg):

Phenom X3 720BE (~200 with combo on mobo)
Biostar 790GX (are people still having results with unlocking that 4th core?)
Corsair 450W psu (~70 with promo code)
Gskill PC2 6400 memory (~$50)
Sapphire Radeon 4850 (~100 with promo code)

1) Doesn't leave me much to play with for an HTPC case

2) Do I need any adapters, extension cables, or anything else that isn't on the lsit above. For example, does the PSU connector match up with the motherboard PSU connection?

I went for the 720BE over the E8400 mainly because 1) it will do better with the decoding of HD content and editing (for my camcorder videos) 2) and will do almost as good on games and 3) price difference

that sounds like a plan to me :) that's a nice choice on the mobo and psu, cant tell ppl enough about the importance of having a quality psu with good chipsets. sometimes the case cant go last b/c you really need one that can fit things right and cant just 'work' a case into the budget, my concern would be your 4850 (make sure there's room for a dual slot card) also wouldn't mind checking out the latest 4770 and maybe even consider low profile card if things wont work out. there is a 9800gt fanless low-profile should be ideal for most games in just about any htpc. check it out on 'egg.

Unfortunately, the low profile 9800GT is out of stock at the egg. It seems to have gotten very good reviews. I am going to look into the 4770, but was hoping that someone had run into the same problem as me concerning a budget HTPC case that can house a 4850 and might have some advice.

Looks like SILVERSTONE Black Aluminum front panel, 0.8 mm SECC body LC17-B ATX Media Center / HTPC Case might be a possiblity. One of the newegg reviewers had the following to say

Cons: 1. The middle hard drive rack had to be removed to fit a Radeon HD4870 Graphics card.

SILVERSTONE HTPC Case
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P Motherboard
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5
2 x G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066
ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro

did you say your budget was $550? hehe b/c this case seems way over budget for this build :\

nothing against the 4870 but it's probably not the first choice for GPU when it comes to SFF HTPC rig, I would suggest 'Single slot' AND/OR 'low profile' to be your priority in GPU hunt. it would save you much headache on the case well as psu choices. i have a b-gears Envi case the front panel buttons works just like a PS3 :) and it's got a built-in 58 card reader AND a slot load external usb hard drive (included w/ the case) i got it for ~$90 on 'bay shipped (like new).

CPU: E8400 (stock)
MOBO: ASUS P5E-VM HDMI G35
GPU: 8800 GT (single slot)
RAM: 4x1gb G-Skill (black D9 Micron)
PSU: Corsair 520HX (mod)
COOLER: Thermalright XP-90 (low profile)
HDD: 2x250 gb
eHDD: 60gb USB (slot load to case front)
FAN: 1x80mm Tri-Cool front (MOD: 1x80mm left side, 1x80mm right side) 1x120mm exhaust (MOD: 1x120mm cooler top for pulling)
CASE: B-Gears Envi
INPUT: Logitech S510, Logitech Max Air
OS: XP SP3

plays: Fallout3, L4D, Far Cry 2, Oblivion, and Warcraft III fine

I got the LC13B-E and put this Biostar 790gxin it. I put my hard drives in the 'external' 3.5 bays.

I was worried about the center 'strut' and felt like that Biostar with the primary PCIe x16 slot at the low end of the board was the way to go. It's worked out great - but I have'nt tried to put an hd4870 in it.

I do however, own one :D and know that it is 9 7/16ths inches long. I think it might fit - the case is massive - and from the specs appears to be a half-inch deeper than the LC17-B.

It would be hard to top the combo with the PhII 720BE. It's less than $200 now w/rebate.

It would be great if you could try out the 4870

After doing some further research, it seems that the 9800gt (low profile) is a viable option as well. But, I am confused about low profile. How do I know whether a particular htpc case "fits" a low profile card? Do all HTPC cases support low profile cards?

that's half correct, b/c many low profile cards also comes w/ regular bracket which you can interchange for it to fit in a regular case. the thing i like about many 'egg items is that they give you an image of the item w/ all the accessories laying out so you can see and make sure before doing the purchase.

Based on heyheybooboo's comments, I am thinking of going with the Silverstone LC13BE. But now I am torn (thanks a lot) between the 9800GT low profile and the Radeon 4850.

Mwave has it for $119 with shipping and promo. It looks like the retail that is out of stock at newegg

It looks like it comes with a regular bracket. So will I need to use the regular bracket or the "low profile" bracket with this HTPC

All in all:

Phenom X3 720BE (~200 with combo on mobo)
Biostar 790GX (are people still having results with unlocking that 4th core?)
Corsair 450W psu (~70 with promo code)
Gskill PC2 6400 memory (~$50)
9800GT low profile with promo ($119)
Silverstone LC13B-E ($127.99 with shipping)

$565

If at least one rebate goes through, I am at $550

Some newegg reviewers suggested having this

Not sure about your PSU but on the Antec EW 650w the 20+4- and 8-pin power cables are 18 inches long. If you have a problem getting to the 4/8-pin power but you can most likely 'snake' the wire in the little open space 'notch' along the I/O side of the mobo (it ain't pretty). Just make sure that you don't 'pop' a 'cap' !

It might work but I wouldn't count on it with the 4870. It's the extra length added by the power lines that are going to get yah even if the card fits. If you put anything in those center bays there just ain't no way.

I would suggest going with an HD4830 (or even HD4770 :( but they jumped in price). They are around 8 1/4 inches and in CrossFire will whup that HD4870. You may want to consider a 600w+ (quiet) PSU if that option is attractive to you.

AND if the HD4870 is a 'showstopper' for you the old design of the LC13 would be great if you could find one. I even have links to the old Silverstone LC13 photos & specs.

Kinda makes me wish I dropped a 'Ben' on an extra one when they were available - LOL - you can have mine if the price is right  . Silverstone makes a great case but they are really big - make sure you have at least 20 inches depth (if not a little more) in your component area.

I went with the LC13B-E and a Sapphire 4850.

It sounds like you are saying that the issue will be the length of the PSU cable. But technically, wouldn't that be a problem in any case. I am not sure what that has to do with the case. I am now praying that I am not going to have any issues.

I am glad that I did not order my PSU on Newegg. I am going to go to Microcenter and try one out. That way, I can return it if the cable is not long enough.

And I don't have a problem removing the center bay. I only plan on using one HD, and as I understand, that will fit fine in the right-side bay.
