Budget Graphic card suggestion

Hi Guys,

i need a budget card within a price range of 80$ to 100$, for now i have selected two cards Gt 240 and 5570, it's very hard to decide between these two, read many reviews and yes i know GT 240's benchmark are greater than 5570
but Gt 240 is a dx 10.1 card whereas 5570 is a dx11 card,

My current setup is Intel 975xbx, ati x1950 pro 512mb card and have this below power supply

PST-EN-400FA

+3.3 +5 +12 -12 -5 5vsb
20a 26a 16a 0.5a 0.3a 2.0a

Resolution i will be using is 1440 * 900, single moniter only

So i need either a new card suggestion or a choice between gt 240 and 5570.

is directx11 gonna help me in any way?, other than that gt 240 beats 5570 in all angles

5570 is a pci x16 2.1 card i guess, will my motherboard support this card?

will these cards best x1950 pro 512mb?

Also if i wait for say 2 or 3 months is there going to be any card in that budget range??

help me out guys

both cards are pretty slow so I would look at something like a 5750 or at least a 5670. according to what you posted that psu is only 16 amps on the 12v line which makes me wonder how it even safely powers the system that you have now. btw what cpu and how much system memory do you have?

EDIT: wow I found a post of yours from 3 1/2 years ago. lol http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/showthread.php?t=33355

my pc config
core 2 duo 1.86ghz
1gb ram
ati raedon x1950 pro 512mb pci express
intel 975xbx motherboard

Actually i wont play most games in my PC.. i have X360 for gaming.. this is only for online gaming like League of legends, heroes of newerth , some beta MMORPG's also if any PC exclusives... also i am only gonna play at 1440 * 900 resolution with medium settings... so i dont see the point in shedding extra cash for my requirement...

and thanks for finding my old post 😛 .. that was the time i bought my graphics card after 3.5 yrs i am thinking of moving on 😛

I dont really think DX11 will matter - the card isnt fast enough for that to matter I would think. Get a GT240, although keep a look out for a 9600GT or a 9800GT as that may be a better deal.

I was thinking of a 9600 gt but those cards exert more power than Gt 240 right??.. my PSU is not a worthy unit... thats why i have left those cards..

Old PSU has all its power on the 3.3V/5V rails. If it has managed to power an x1950 pro, should handle GT240. Forget DX11 as a feature when you are at the low-end: features like low power/noise & hardware decoding are more appropriate.

How did you even find that post?

If you get the GT240 make sure it has DDR5, NOT ddr3.

Also for $100 dollars get a GTS450 card. It does not use a lot of power and is DX11.
I upgraded from a GT240 to a GTS450. I put a GT240, with DDR5, in my HTPC.

Here is a GTS450 for $79 after rebate with free shipping

The GT240 with DDR5 should be faster than the 5570.
But the 5670 will be AMDs card that is faster than the GT240

5670 for $75 AR

he has 16 amps on the 12v of an old psu so he will not be running a card like the gtx460. also 1gb of system ram and an old 1.86 cpu is not the kind of pc that you put a gtx460 with.

GT240 can play most games at high/max detail (probably not w AA but depends on the game) at 1440x900

I would pick that over the AMD card. The AMD equivalent is the 5670. If you really want DX11, I would wait till the 5770 goes on sale in that range (might as well get the 1GB version also). There might be an AMD 6XX0 series card in that range but new AMD cards seem to sell for retail (not on sale a lot).

If you just want to the spend the least, get the GT 240. It goes on sale a lot. Most I would pay for it is $40AR. Fry's had one on sale the other day for $20AR. I bought an EVGA version for $13.60. All of these (the one you should get) are the GDDR5 version.

I recently bought my gtx 460/768 for $115AR, I'd think at that price range, it's the best bang for buck.

$40 GT240 blows it away on price/performance (I own both. EVGA GT240 GDDR5 and an Asus GTX 460 768MB). And like was already stated, the GTX 460 its excessive for his computer.

That is a good card but they cost more than the GT240. Cheapest I'm seeing it on newegg right now is $75AR (there are two $65AR Sapphires but they are out of stock).

Even if you were to find one at $55AR, it would have to average 37% faster than the ($40AR, common and available now) GT240 to maintain the same price/performance ratio. It doesn't. If I remember correctly, its about 5~10% faster or so...

You're crazy. It is nowhere near 3 times the performance. Its probably a little bit better than double. 🙂

gt240 = 9600gt 9600gt x3 = gtx 285 gtx 460 768 is = or faster then a gtx285. How do you do the math?

From tomshardware review..
"The GeForce GT 240 serves up just what the doctor ordered. The cost-effective 40nm process, combined with a 128-bit memory interface, helps keep production costs down, while 96 stream processors and fast GDDR5 memory keep performance in the ballpark of the venerable GeForce 9600 GT. Pairing the new card with cheaper DDR3 memory will allow the price to drop even further, replacing the GeForce 9600 GSO as strong competition for ATI's Radeon HD 4670."

😀 You won't do it with "math"

You look at benchmarks.

9600gt in sli vs the 8800gtx.........

very good. Do you remember which videocards we are talking about?

gt240 = 9600gt, 9600gt in sli = 8800gtx, 8800gtx sli = gtx285

Make that 3 or 4x faster.

8800gtx in sli = gtx285.

8800GTX SLI 624/1462/1057 1680x1050 4xAA
Min FPS: 28.90, Max FPS: 58.44, Average FPS: 48.16

with Vsync and Triplebuffering (d3d9_triplebuffering=1)
Min FPS: 33.36, Max FPS: 58.89, Average FPS: 48.37

GTX285 666/1512/1242 1680x1050 4xAA
Min FPS: 32.86, Max FPS: 61.13, Average FPS: 47.91

with Vsync and Triplebuffering (d3d9_triplebuffering=1)
Min FPS: 32.24, Max FPS: 59.82, Average FPS: 47.85

sorry for off topic but the gt240 at 40$ is not the better bang for the buck vs the gtx460 768. 🙂

instead of making up a bunch of crap, why not post some benchmarks? Once again, none of those cards are the ones we are talking about...

I look at deals all the time. I know which one is best.
