If I had $75 to spend, someone recommending a $95 card would not do me a bit of good.

usually when we say out maximum budget is a certain number (like $75 for instance) the actual budget is probably smaller, more like $50. our maximum is really what it is, the maximum ammount we're willing to stretch. Dont' judge the guy just because he's on a tight leash.

Anyways, he already got his answer, assuming he can't find a way to shave $20 off the rest of the build or save up for the $20 -- 9600GT.

Which is why you should always understate your budget. Don't give an absolute maximum amount you're willing to spend, give the amount you'd like to spend. Maybe this guy can spend at most $75, but would really much rather do $50. Recommending $100 cards means we're doubling his preferred budget and overshooting his maximum by $25. Doesn't seem like much but for some people that's half a day's work.

Besides, I think it's commendable that he's willing to admit that he's on a tight budget and is setting limits for himself instead of splurging just because. Beggars can't be choosers and all.

Exactly! No one's passing judgment or belittling the OP. Different strokes for different folks - some think spending another $20 on a vid card is a waste of money while throwing away that money on ~4 cups of "coffee", some don't ;)

I just recently bought the HIS HD4650 on Newegg for $49.99 with free shipping. The card was that price for a couple of weeks, but it didn't have the free shipping. As soon as it was free, I jumped on the deal. I upgraded from an Nvidia 7600GS.

I knew what I was looking for, and when the price was right, I jumped on it. I was also considering the 9500GT, but it all came down to the FINAL price and the 4650 was cheaper with better performance. I don't like to deal with MIR's or shipping or anything like that.

For me, my max price I wanted to pay was $50, and I just waited until the right thing came along to fit the bill. To some people, a few extra dollars is no big deal and they would rather get the $100 card rather than the $75 card, others would rather wait for a good deal or forfeit the extra performance for the max price they set for themselves.

As far as the OP goes, if $75 is the absolute max, I think an HD 4670 would be the best bet if you can wait and find a great 1 day deal or something. Otherwise, depending on what your computer specs are or if you would actually rather spend a little less, the HD 4650 or 9500GT would be a great fit. Sometimes you can find good deals on higher end cards, but for the most part, those 2 cards are going to give you the best performance for what you want to spend.

***EDIT***

Also, the HD 3870 and 9600GT would definetely be the best performance, but be at the tip top of your budget AND require a beefier power supply. The HD 4650 DDR4 or a 4670 will give you awesome performance for cheaper, but also doesn't require the separate power so you can save some money on the PSU as well.

The lowest I have ever seen the 4830's has been about $85 before shipping or MIR. If that is still out of your budget when you are ready to get your card, the 9600GT's have some deals every once in a while, or the HD 4670 would always do you good. I hear that there is going to be a couple of new Radeon 4XXX series cards coming soon with DDR5 memory and smaller NM technology, maybe the 4830 will come down in price then...

4670.

4830 probably needs a new power supply = double the budget.

Agreed. I would have loved to get the 4670 with the faster memory and core clock, but I just didn't want to spend the extra for it. My games run great with my card. A lot of it depends on what games you are going to play. I personally am a racing game fan and those games run pretty good without huge graphics cards, so my needs were well met with a middle rung card. Also, the resolutions you are going to play at make a big difference too. My monitor maxes out at 1680x1050, so anything above a 4670 would be overkill for 95% of games.

The latest and greatest games with high resolutions will automatically equal a much bigger budget for the whole system. If you are looking at a max of $75 for a graphics card, I am guessing that your total budget for your system is probably around $600.

Well, honestly is welcome, as long as it's not accompanied by unnecessary rudeness. It's not too much to ask for the answer to simple questions in order to offer better information in response.
