Yikes! Good call. He needs to get that HDD temp down below 50C; I'd wager he doesn't have any kind of intake fan in front of the HDD bay.

  I second that!

In the P180, there are two chambers for HDDs, an upper and a lower. By default, the case only comes with a fan for one of the chambers, so you would need to either move the HDD or fan to match.

The poor airflow is probably also the reason why the CPU runs so hot. I have a pretty cheap no-name case but my HDD's usually run about 35C or less. That's with a single 80mm fan in the front of the case.

At 53C, the drives have got to be completely enclosed, with absolutely no airflow around them...

the P180 will warm your drives up like you won't believe, even without being blocked. part of it is the silicone grommets for the mounting. yes, they insulate vibration, but they also insulate heat. the screw->case heat transfer isn't huge on an absolute scale but a couple watts is huge for a hard drive. and unfortunately the bottom chamber has possibly the worst fan position ever devised. some people have shoved a slim scythe slipstream in front of the drives.

what's your fan set up for the P180, OP? without a fan in the top, usually people on SPCR and the like have been blocking the top blow hole as it creates a shortcut for air through the top to the exhaust (and a direct noise path).

both HDDs are in the middle hard drive bay, meaning no fan blowing on them.

the bottom HDD bay has a large fan mounted directly behind it, so I may move them to see what happens.

also, im not sure what happened but my CPU temps have dropped down to ~38C idle (so says CPUID). and using the asus temp monitor software that came with the mobo, it says the CPU is at 28C, so not sure which to believe... but either way the temps are looking good on the CPU.

Definitely move that fan to the upper chamber or move the HDDs down to the lower one.
