At $100 you're looking at an AMD X2 3800.

You can pick up an E4300 and mobo combo for $160'ish from frys i believe though.

Get some DDR2 6400 and you should be able to OC that chip to at least 2.8g ..


For about $100 more you could go with Core 2 Duo , which would potentially be a better performer..

I just installed an Opteron 165 ($125 I beleive) and overclocked it to 2.835 Ghz on air. Just some input.

If you want to spend $ 100 for CPU, X2 3800+ 65W is your choice, and only choice. Don't even consider Pentium D's in same price range.

If you want to push your limit a bit higher, then you can get E4300 or E6300. New ones are about $ 170 and $ 180 respectively. Or used ones are about $ 150 range.

i have to agree with going for an X2 3800+ if your budget is only $100 right now.

but then again, i suppose it also depends on what you already have...
if you have ddr2 memory already, c2d would be the better way to go, but will cost you more than the $100 budget you've set up, as everydae already mentioned.

but if you have s939 system on your hands, or something else with ddr tech, then go with the x2.

scrape up another $60 and get the e4300 at Fry's. It even comes with a motherboard. It's leaps and bounds better than the amd x2 3800

Yeah, for 100USD your options are the Pentium D 915 or the Athlon 64x2 3600+, in this case I would give the X2 the nod for performance.

thanks Mark, that's good to know. I just looked up a couple spec sheets while I was in a hurry to get somewhere. I didn't see X2 anywhere so I was unsure. I feel better now.

Unless you have a pressing need for Dual Core now, and since there will be price drops when the new C2D's come out at the end of April, why not just drop in a Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego for $76 shipped now.

DDR2 and C2D mobo prices should continue to fall in the meantime, snatch up some D9's when you see them at the right price. Then when May gets here, make an informed decision on which platform you want to go with. That's my plan anyway.

Yes, I have an X2 in my Neo4, so I can tell you right now that it supports it. You might have to do a BIOS update first, but that's it.
