budget card choice... (100-150$)

i'm gonna be building my budget comp soon (~900$)

im deciding on my video card... either a x1950pro for $130 after tax, shipping, rebate..
or the x1950xt for $170 after tax, shipping. both from newegg

i know the x1950xt is faster... but is it worth $40 faster? i mean will this 30% price increase give me a 30% boost in performance?

i just wanna hear your opinions on it.
thanks.

8600GTS I think is 150ish sometimes. That's maybe more duture proof. BUt if you just want the best now, I think x1950pro should be it. oh 8600gts also can do much more hardware h264 acceleration.

The X1950XT will smoke the 8600GTS in dx9 games. The XT can't run DX10 games, but all things considered the 8600gt probably won't be able to either.

Tom's Hardware chart is misleading. It simply adds up all the framerates in all the resolutions tested for a total number of framerates. This means at lower resolutions where X1950Pro is good enough, you are assigning equal weight to the numbers as to resolutions with high AA/AF enabled where X1950XTX smokes X1950Pro. But why wouldn't someone with an X1950XTX play at higher resolutions with higher quality AA/AF settings? Since extra shaders and 512mb allow you to increase AA/AF, it's fair to compare the cards under most stressful scenarios.

At 1600x1200 4AA/16AF X1950XTX is on average 50% faster than X1950Pro in these games:

Anno 1701
Call of Duty 2
Call of Juarez
Company of Heroes
Doom 3
F.E.A.R.
Gothic 3
HL2: Lost Coast
Oblivion
Prey
Rainbow Six Vegas
The Chronicles of Riddick
Serious Sam 2
Splinter Cell 3
Splinter Cell 4
Stalker
Tomb Raider: Legend
Call of Juarez D3D10

But it's even more important to single out some of the latest titles that came out:

Company of Heroes (X1900XT 512mb is more than 2x faster) and Supreme Commander where it is close to 50% faster
2x faster in STALKER, etc.

I completely agree.

The X1950XT can be up to 50% faster than the X1950 Pro, depending on the game, the resolution you'll be using, and whether or not you'll be using AA/AF, and how much of it you're using.
