Personally, I'd go with 8. It's newer and will be supported longer. I've used it enough, and now that 8.1 is out, I kinda like it. You may feel different, but for me, I can't see the point in buying an OS that is older for the same price as the newer version.

If you do end up ordering separate, I would recommend going this route:

It's a few more bucks, but it is a retail copy which are said to be much easier to use for reactivation. So if, in time, you want to rebuild his system with new hardware, you shouldn't have one lick of trouble with a retail copy as far as activation goes.
