Buddy of mine and I are heading to NYC

It's my first time going to NYC, but my friend's been there before. We'll be there tomorrow til Saturday and we're looking for some places to hit at night... can anyone recommend anything? Preferably somewhere out of the big touristy spots and chill with decent music, that won't be dead on a Wednesday / Thursday night.

Depends on what you like to do, what you like to eat, what your budget is.. Maybe that'll help others to narrow down suggestions for you.

There's a 60% chance of rain tomorrow, but it's also the warmest day of the week..

edit: Probably also lots of old threads on this topic.

Just go to Time Square. You're going to run out of places to see before you figure out where everything is. Since it's your first time in NYC, if you take a cab don't look out the windshield when the driver is driving. Only look out the sides.

It's New York...people are always out and Wednesdays and Thursdays are good bar nights anyway. Where exactly are you staying? If you're not familiar with Manhattan, I would suggest you stick to your neighborhood the first few nights and then venture out.

And there's always music to be found, just pick up a newsletter on the sidewalk and see who's playing where.

Neither of those are very "chill" or will have good music. Serious replies?

Kenka's in st. marks place if you wanna get loaded. Also McSorleys... not super fun, but worth seeing.

NYC has gillion of bars, it's better to just narrow it down based on where you wanna be.

I'm staying in Jersey City right near the PATH station, so we'll be going into Manhattan. Luckily the PATH runs 24/7 so we can get back at any hour of the morning. Money really doesn't matter, but I don't really wanna pay over $10 for a drink.

 ? A beer shouldn't cost me over $10.

You don't know much about NYC - there's some very fine music in the subways.

You want something out of the way? On Fri. Mar. 13 at 7:45 pm The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Society presents Love In The Subjunctive, An Evening of Dubious Love Songs at The Community Church, 40 E. 35th Street. It's free.

Have a good visit.

if you're at st. marks, go to some bars in the east village. my favorite is the thirsty scholar between 9th and 10th on 2nd ave (i think).

Good area for younger people. You can walk all over and find tons of people hanging out.

Oh and about drink prices. All depends on the place. Higher end lounges all have $10+ drinks so go where the locals go. It's better on a wed night anyways. Mid week hang outs are usually a lot more chill and fun then fri/sat night hot spots. You can actually talk and meet people.

If you're in the area, check out Pianos - pianosnyc.com. Tons of live music and a decent bar. (They serve food too, and it wasn't even half bad the one time I tried it)

If you're not an asshole, stay inside the hotel. You're not going to fit in.

this is NY we're talking about. everybody is an asshole here. Both East and West Village have plenty of bars and a decent night scene to walk around in.

As for food:
Steak- Wolfgang's/Ben and Jack's/Peter Lugers
Burgers- Shake Shack, Corner Bistro,
Ramen- Ippudo, Menkui Tei, or Naruto Ramen
Korean Fried Chicken- BonChon Chicken
Korean- Kum Gang San or BCD Tofu House for reliable options
Japanese Curry/Udon- head to this little hole in wall place on St. Mark's Pl, in East Village called Udon West
At around 7:00pm, head over to 53rd Street and 6th avenue and jump into the long line you see forming at a street corner around a particular Halal Cart. Get the chicken and rice there, but tell them easy on the hot sauce because that sauce is REALLY spicey.

BBQ
Rack and Soul for Louisiana Style Pork Ribs and southern Fried Chicken
Daisy Mae's for Ohklahoma Beef Ribs and dry rub pork ribs
Hill Country if you like smoked meats

Skipping out on Papaya Dog isn't a big deal even though you'll see them everywhere.
