If you're not an asshole, stay inside the hotel. You're not going to fit in.
this is NY we're talking about. everybody is an asshole here. Both East and West Village have plenty of bars and a decent night scene to walk around in.
As for food:
Steak- Wolfgang's/Ben and Jack's/Peter Lugers
Burgers- Shake Shack, Corner Bistro,
Ramen- Ippudo, Menkui Tei, or Naruto Ramen
Korean Fried Chicken- BonChon Chicken
Korean- Kum Gang San or BCD Tofu House for reliable options
Japanese Curry/Udon- head to this little hole in wall place on St. Mark's Pl, in East Village called Udon West
At around 7:00pm, head over to 53rd Street and 6th avenue and jump into the long line you see forming at a street corner around a particular Halal Cart. Get the chicken and rice there, but tell them easy on the hot sauce because that sauce is REALLY spicey.
BBQ
Rack and Soul for Louisiana Style Pork Ribs and southern Fried Chicken
Daisy Mae's for Ohklahoma Beef Ribs and dry rub pork ribs
Hill Country if you like smoked meats
Skipping out on Papaya Dog isn't a big deal even though you'll see them everywhere.
