It falls under the scope of a branch of Buddism labeled "Esoteric." It finds its origins in the Lotus Sutra, a Chinese monk named Hui-ssu. It is, generally, regarded as a legitimate form of Buddhism. The statue in question may have been one of the protector deities of Buddhism or possibly a bodhisattva. However, the existence of protector deities should not be construed to mean the existence of any "God" as in the Judeo-Christian tradition.
