Woman Says She Got Typhus From Working at Rat-Infested City Hall

Return of ‘Medieval’ Diseases Like Typhus is seeing a resurgence among the homeless population of Los Angeles, and it's not just them who are at risk.

I wonder if they’ve tried cutting government health services and using the savings to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.

I feel that is the first solution to try to solve this health crisis.

How else are we going to create jobs for the homeless? Everyone knows the wealthy take their tax savings and directly hire homeless people with it.

Yes we’ll you know it’s so difficult to hunt with so many animals on the endangered species list. One must find the the most dangerous game where one can. ;)

He really helped to string out Ben-fucking-ghazi forever, didn't he? Right wing conspiracy theorists went absolutely wild over it. Flood the public consciousness with bullshit whenever possible.
You aren't a smart, only Trump and his Faithful!

So I haven't kept up with the latest research on Ebola. What's the latest? Any good papers?
There's a vaccine now that's like 97-99% effective, so that's pretty fucking amazing.

I don't worry about that very much but Ebola and a few other diseases scare the crap out of those familiar with it. We don't even know how it spreads. We have some clues but the actual mechanism? Beats the hell out of us. There's also the possibility that Ebola could become infective by airborne particulate. Think "Andromeda strain" on steroids.

Isn't knowledge fun?
Bats are evidently a vector for Ebola. They may eat a part of a fruit, it drops to the ground and if consumed by a human, it's passed on. High mortality rate and quite infectious, ebola's pretty scary.

Speaking of Ebola, not getting much media attention in N. America but:

The world's second-biggest Ebola outbreak is still raging. Here's why.

"An Ebola epidemic thundering through heavily populated provinces in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has sickened 1,877 people and killed 1,248 as of May 22, according to the World Health Organization—despite the efforts of specialist medical teams, an effective vaccine, and new treatments that are being tested in the region.

The outbreak already is the second-largest on record, behind the epidemic that burned through West Africa from 2014 to 2016, killing more than 11,300 people."

Thank you, OP for dispassionately and without bias bringing a well-known fact in educated circles to the masses. You have received your just rewards.
if the word liberal was not in the article KillerBee would not be so passionate about public health!

This story is sensationalist in nature, but there is a growing sanitary epidemic in many American cities. Homeless encampments are increasing rodent populations, becoming breeding grounds for bacteria and are a huge source of human and drug use waste. The smell of summer is now the human waste concentrated around Penn Station, Skid Row and the numerous other encampments across the nation, with efforts to provide housing thwarted by NIMBYism.

I'd really like to see a total abolition of all "single use" polymers/plastics. Anything that isn't easily recycled or easily biodegraded has no place being "disposable"
Plastic *is* easily recycled.

Yeah, let's wipe out the whole concept of 3D printing with a misguided law.

Where would the plastic go? It's a byproduct. It has to go somewhere.

What you're saying is patently ridiculous. Glass from broken bottles/containers would cause far FAR more actual harm to humans and animals than inert discarded plastic.

I remember what it was like in the late 1980s / early 1990s -- when soda manufacturers still used mostly glass. BROKEN. GLASS. EVERYWHERE. I used to walk for miles on the railroad tracks and you wouldn't believe the amount of broken glass around the bridges and overpasses. It would be MUCH worse if plastic was banned completely and even more products had to use glass containers. Also consider how much heavier the products would be. The environmental impact on shipping and distribution can't be ignored. More trips. Also more energy used per-trip.

Is your claim that ALL plastic is recyclable, and ALL of it is easy?
Do you imply that there's some super special plastic which cannot be easily recycled?

Even if that's the case, ...as a material plastic is super safe and its environmental impact is almost nothing. Go ahead and cherry-pick some rare cases of sea animals that ingested pieces. Address the issue of dumping waste in the sea.

Alternatives to plastic (such as glass) are FAR FAR FAR more hazardous.
