I recently experienced a weird problem with my setup. It's an AOpen s651m motherboard with a P4 2.8GHz 533MHz CPU. I have a 512MB DDR module in one of the DIMM slots, and a 1GB DDR module in the other. I have had this setup for the last few years (added the 1GB in February). Everything was fine until June 1. Now Windows keeps crashing. I get various BSoD errors.
I used memtest in Ubuntu's installer and the modules are fine when placed in either of the available DIMM slots as long as only one is installed. When two are installed, memtest detects errors after about 1GB. I have tried all the possible combinations:
for the following, memtest detected no errors:
only 512MB on DIMM1
only 512MB on DIMM2
only 1GB on DIMM1
only 1GB on DIMM2
and for the following combo, I installed on one slot first, tested without errors detected by memtest, and after I had added the second module, errors were once again detect after 1GB.
1GB on DIMM1 and 512MB on DIMM2
512MB on DIMM1 and 1GB on DIMM2
1GB on DIMM2 then 512MB on DIMM1
512MB on DIMM2 then 1GB on DIMM1
Right now, I am re-installing Windows on the system with only the 1GB module, and it is working fine. When I use the 512MB module, it works fine as well. Should I disassemble and clean all the hardware components, or is there another solution to this?
