I have been experiencing problems with CounterStrike under Windows 2000. Occasionally when playing the game it will lockup. Also, sometimes I will get BSODs while attempting to open or close it. I don't understand why, and I have no problems with any other software. Check my systems rigs profile for information about my system.

As much as I like 2K as an OS...it's not all that great for games. I mean, it's good considersing it was supposed to be primarily a business OS, but XP handles games much better.

Have you tried the application updates available through Windows Update?

I have already downloaded all of the updates from windows update concerning application compatibility. Here is my system config, so you don't have to go look for it:
EPoX 8KHA+
TBird 1GHz@1233MHz
512MB Crucal PC2100
Radeon 8500 Retail
SB Live! Value
Linksys LNE100TX Netcard

I still experience problems even when not overclocked, the problem is unrelated. Also, sometimes in the BSODs I notice it mention the file wmaud.sys.

Need more info. What paritition format are you using, NTFS or FAT32?. Do you have DirectX 8.1 installed? Are you running anything else in the background or services that you don't need?

I've never had CS lock up on my Win2k workstation, but I mainly use Win98SE for games, not 2k.

I use the NTFS filing system. Also, I have the latest patches and drivers including DirectX 8.1. I have disabled some unused services as well.
