BSOD when upgrading CPU's in XP?

I just bought an athlon xp 1800+ from Compubuzz.com for $84 shipped because my old cpu (1.4 athlon) was crashing alot (crashed 5 times writing this document!) and over the last few days its crashed every 10 mins... Can some one look over my rig and see if some of my components are known for instability... Also after I get the cpu will I have to go to control panel and uninstall the athlon 1.4 before I replace it with the 1800+? What will I have to do inorder to avoid the BSOD that I got when I replaced my Iwill KA266 with my msi kt333 ultra?

thanks in advance for your help everyone...

🙂

installing a new cpu is a whole word apart from upgrading your mobo.

you're not going to see any of the same problems you had last time most likely

really quite simple. swap out CPU's , and go into bios on boot-up and make sure its reporting the right speed

there's nothing to uninstall in device manager

just remember to use some thermal grease between the cpu and the heatsink

Sounds like it is running hot. Otherwise if one of your IBM GXP drives is failing you could get lots of crashes. Without any clue to the error it would be a hard guess. Could even be PSU problems.

I have changed processors and not gotten a BSOD from XP. Ive even changed out a motherboard with the same chipset and didnt even have to reactivate.

afirmative! I've got some left over artic silver 3 from my friend which I"m gonna use... What do you think of my rig? Since I upgraded the mobo the crashes have become more frequent... but then again my cpu is old and has been in and out of computers about 8 times... plus I smeared some artic silver I (the first kind... not 3) all over the substrate when I first got the cpu... Do you think the mobo is the cause of the problem? or the CPU? I'm using the cpu as a scapegoat since I just got this mobo and it cost me too much ... suggestions ... questions?

I crashed again... dang! I don't know if it's the power supply ... but I just changed the fan on it to a 35cfm top motor fan...

(btw: I got electricuted when I did this! Remember- just cause you turn it off- doesn't mean that it's off! You have to unplug it!)

anyways maybe my being electricuted ruined it? Also, if I use the drive fitness test thing from ibm will that help me analyze possible problems with the hard drive? I did everything in norton utilities yesterday and I found no problems... is it possible that the kt333 that I bought was just freakishly unstable?

mastertech,

btw I'm sorry to hear about your daughter... its such a heartbreaking thing to hear... I almost lost my daughter when she was born... you must have a strong heart to endure such pain... hope I haven't brought back old pain by saying this.... but sometimes common folk like you need some recognition...

Thanks for your time... 🙂
