BSOD Problems Again

Well to preface this post I'd like to thank those of you who really took a lot of your own time to help me out with my issues. Unfortunately they seem to be appearing again and this time the BSODs are coming in a variety of forms.

I was just playing FIFA 08 and got one that said BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER or maybe _ERROR and that's a new one to me. I don't have my portable hard drive with me since I came back to my hometown for the week so I'm out of luck as far as trying to back stuff up goes.

System Specs:
ASUS M2N-E SLI
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
2 GB RAM (2x1GB)
GF 8600GTS
3 HDDs (2 IDE, 1 SATA)
2 Optical Drives

Ever since the last time I went through the ordeal of debugging, memory testing, and eventually reformatting my front port USB hasn't worked, but I was okay with that since it seemed like the amount of BSODs decreased. However, they're back again and this time I won't settle with anything other than completely eliminating them as this is just bs.

dclive, if you're in the house, is it possible for me to send you my minidump file? I'm afraid if I try to open it it'll be corrupt like all the other ones were.

well, I think based on the old post, it's the motherboard, you can rma it through ASUS. That's my professional opinion. no cost to you to RMA it since it is under warranty, you said something about having it 40 days or so.

Whether you open it or I open it, the results should be exactly the same. Please open it in the debugger (get MS's latest - links on my web page), read over the debug guide, and post what happens when you open and analyze your dump.

Alright, will do on the debug. I thought maybe it was on my end that it was getting corrupted.

robisbell, I'm kinda starting to get that feeling since I've heard from a couple other people and seen threads relating to issues with this mobo. What sucks is that I bought it for the fact that it had everything I could ever want from a motherboard and I'm not sure if RMA'ing for another of the same type will make a difference. I'm planning on emailing their tech support tomorrow when I get a chance to make sure I've got all the specs right that they need.

okay, I did some checking and seeing similar issues, a few report back that the replacement boards did not have any issues and some swear the chip layout was different.

Hmmm... that'd be awesome if that's true. I'll look into it today. I plan on sending them an official tech support inquiry.

Edit: Links by any chance? I wonder if these people had theirs for a while because now I'm pushing the 2 and a half month point.

they all RMA'ed them to ASUS, I think it has a 3 year warranty, correct. I'll see if I can locate the posts again, it was late when I read them.

So I've been waiting patiently the past 3 or 4 days to hear from the RMA department but I'm starting to get a little impatient. Anyone know how long I should expect to wait until I hear a reply. I already had to wait 2 days before the tech people responded to it and I never even got an email, I went to the link they said if you don't hear from them in 48 hours to go to. At that site it said that they emailed me back roughly 12 hours before I sent the form.

well. with it being a holiday last week, I'd expect a delay with it being the holiday season and all. I'd try a phone call if you can.

And that same output is what they all say? If so, you've got a problem with nv4 (the nvidia driver) or a related subsystem. I don't see the USB error bits that you originally wrote of, though....

The Stop 50 error, though, is typically driver-related. The USB errors you mentioned above, though, may not be - did you analyze all of the dumps in the minidumps directory?

it's a hardware issue, doing anything other than RMAing the hardware is futile, you've been dragged though that by some people long enough, they've dragged this out weeks long than it should have been.

Agreed it's a hardware issue - and how did we find that? We looked at the dumps. That's what you do when you have bluescreens, since a dump is written that points to the cause of the problem.

Within hours of looking at the dump, he had his answer. Can't ask for much better on a message forum. It's far better than just saying a generic "Well, it must be hardware" - looking at dumpfiles is the correct way to address this.

Rob, give it up. You wanted to wrongly blame the motherboard - with absolutely no evidence to go on other than "this is what I've seen in my 25 years of pc troubleshooting experience" - that's horrible.

The dumpfile is *evidence* of what is happening in Windows. Experiencing bluescreens and then troubleshooting without looking at that is silly.

If he had listened to you, he'd have replaced the motherboard with another and still had the problem. As of now the issue appears to be solved....we'll knock on wood and wait a week or so before declaring that, but at least we're off to a good start....and it's not a guess.

Robisbell - do not send me PMs, please. I've asked you several times to stop the nasty and rude messages. You asked in a PM (among other insults) why I said he should analyze the dump and replace what that pointed to (the nvidia card) rather than the motherboard - the answer is obvious, particularly now that he replaced the card and hasn't had the problem anymore.

Get with the program....and stop sending people insulting PMs.

Aplefka - if you need any help getting ASUS to respond please let me know.

Dc - you're dangerous, you take 2 months to try and fix an issue and you can not even keep two different people and issues seperate and if you can not stand criticism and have to post it in a forum, which is childish, go right ahead. I guess when someone points out how danerous you are in PM's and is giving you a chance to correct yourself, you find it insulting. I suggest since you're not a computer tech but a pitch man for MS and more a software tech, you should stick to the windows forums.

As much as I hate to break the two of you up to get back to the issue at hand, what's my next step? I've already sent the RMA request and am waiting to hear back, but in the meantime what do I do about that driver? I'm almost positive it's the latest one since I updated from the internet rather than the CD when I reformatted last month.

Please point to how you know it's the motherboard. Please supply actual evidence, not a guess.

On the other hand, I *can* point to where Windows XP tells us there's an issue with nv4. Absent any other information, it's the best we've got so far, and it clearly did solve the other issue (which I note you've now become very quiet on ...grin).

Concerning your constant repeating of who's a hardware tech and who's not, honestly that's probably not something, as a college-educated person, I'd want to be called. Typically a hardware tech is at the bottom of the corporate pay ladder, since the overall solution at any given time can be as easy as just replacing the hardware, and, especially on a PC, that's cheap. I'm not sure why you keep plugging that....worst case scenario, anyone on here can always replace the hardware - you're saying 'it's a hardware problem' and guessing as to the cause just isn't helpful.

This is almost as nutty as your power supply comments! :)

it's the board, doing anything else would be futile since software will not fix a hardware issue.

Do you have another graphics card, perhaps one not from nVidia, to try for a little while to see if that particular type of crash stops?

Do all the other dumps have that same fault and cause?

aplefka - have you tried calling? Tel: 812-282-2787

I sent you a list of sites where people are having issues with that board, ome similar, and some not. I say it's the board when you have USB, Sound, memory, issues and now video, there's only one common factor in all of them, the motherboard.

ASUS has a separate USB driver listed for the motherboard here. The download page does say you don't need to use this driver if you have at least SP1 installed, but since your drivers appear to be acting up I would give this a try.

If that doesn't work, you can also get the complete chipset drivers for your motherboard from here.

Fardringle - Thanks for the input. Didn't try the USB drivers since they were just supposed to be USB 2.0 and I've got SP2 on here but I did use their complete chipset drivers when I reformatted a little while back.

dclive - I'm going to go through all the other dumps slowly throughout the day. I'm trying not to do anything that'll piss me off since I've got a huge workload and haven't relaxed at all in forever. I know that going through those dumps can only frustrate me.

robisbell - I haven't tried calling. I assumed it was a M-F number. I got the PM, thanks.
