BSOD..argh

I came home after leaving for a bit while my two machines were transferring a few files between eachother, my main machine converting a winamp playlist to .wav's.

and...i see....my old nemesis.

it had been a long time since we last faced off, and i believe it was a harsh outcome for myself.

Anyways, i got the BSOD on both machines actually, which was a tad odd. I rebooted both and my secondary machine was fine after that. But the first...was another story.

I was greeted with the message "DISK BOOT ERROR, REPLACE WITH SYSTEM DISK"

god...i dont like the sound of that.

I unplugged the power and ide cable to the drive and plugged them back in. I restarted again and now...the monitor wont turn on. It just stays on the amber led.

Great.

Tried plugging the main box into the secondary monitor...same thing

Tried swapping video cards.... no luck

gahd...:(

Any ideas? I really, really, really do not want to format...

any help appreciated, thanks gang! :)

Might want to post in the OS forums, just give link from here to there...

have you tried google to see if that'll help a bit?

Okay, I dont want to insult you, but the invalid disk error is ususally the result of accidentally leaving a floppy in the floppy drive (easy to do with cases that cover floppy bay)

What happens if you put in a Win98 boot floppy or the Win2k setup disk?

Lastly, are you sure you did not accidentally transfer som windows files or move them?

thanks to those who replied.

i probably should have posted this in the OS forum but alas...

anyways, yes, i made sure there was not a disk in the drive, heh ;)

I tried booting up to the win2k boot disk but i still get nothing on the monitor. I took out the HD on my main machine and backed everything up onto the secondary computer, so if worst comes to worse i can just format.

Unfortunatley i dunno if i will get that far.

Again, when i try to boot up, i get nothing on the monitor but a flashing amber led.

any ideas? im up for anything..heh =/

thx guys

For problems like this, I always recommend removing everything except the CPU, 1 stick o' RAM, and the vid card. Unplug EVERYTHING else......floppy, IDE devices, sound card, NIC's...everything. Turn the system on and see if it will POST and give you a display on the monitor.

Hmm, have you tried degaussing the monitor? Your manual should say how to. It basically gets rid of any magnetic field
problems that might keep it from displaying...Other than that, maybe you video connection became unseeted or something.

This is definitely a hardware issue. POST is independent of drives, etc. Stripping to a bare mb with one stick of ram, vid card, processor, is a good start. If you can borrow those from another working box you will save time. Try for post with these components, keyboard, nothing else. No luck, Clear CMOS. Still no luck, swap power supply. No Luck? Either a bad bios or bios chip, or dead motherboard.:)
