BSD vs. Linux

I'm thinking about taking some older parts of mine and putting a system together. I've been using Linux for probably 18months and want to know if BSD is any better. I read on freebsd's site that freebsd will run linux programs. is this true of all bsds, and of all linux programs? is the performance of something written for linux worse on bsd?

basically i'm toying with other operating systems and want to try as many as i can. so which is better (in your opinion): bsd or linux?

You can compile most everything for Linux for BSD too if you just use sources instead of binaries. Most "Linux" software is really just written for a generic Unix so you can use it in native BSD mode fine. From what I've gathered (and experienced on the workstation side) is that BSD doesn't make as good of a workstation as Linux (speed wise). It's REALLY fast under heavey loads and lots of connections/users (ie, server environment), but Linux is said to be "snappier" on a single user workstation. Of course don't let that stop your from trying it. (learn from experience).
