sounds like a high school intro to computer class. Just let it go cause high school doesn't matter.

lmao either you are a snob or you have never been in a hs intro to computer class. i haven't either but i've tutored kids on "what's a mouse" and "where does the monitor go"

Oh, I have been in an intro to computer class, but that was, what, 5 years ago? Those sounded like the same exact questions i got when i was in it, I remember we had that same exact question about whether the fan blows in our not. To answer your question, I am a snob.
i highly doubt the questions were in that much detail

well, then doubt.

Yeah, the HS computer courses suck 😛

Because we all know that the most common browser is Netscape, the second most common is Internet Explorer. 😉

Of course nobody but all of us challenged that 😛 Kind of sucks that the cirriculum is over 4 years old. 🙁 It's the first year for the class 😛

Online material too 😛

It's an easy A though.

i have to try pretty hard to keep quiet when they tell us that a video card's power is measured by the amount of memory it has...some dumbass behind me brags about his 256mb fx5200

in-class discussions get pretty stupid fairly often, the other day some guy kept asking why he couldn't delete the pagefile on his computer to save disk space, i told him you shouldn't but if you really want to you can set it as low as 2mb, and he still complained. when asked how big his hard drive is, he had no idea. sigh...

4. Which of the following statements about an ATX system is false?

a. Components on the motherboard are arranged so as not to interfere with each other.

b. The power supply fan blows air out of the case.

c. There are fewer wires used to connect switches and lights on the front of the case.

d. The position of the power supply and drives inside the case makes connecting them easier and makes it possible to reduce cable lengths.

answer is B on the answer key.
I put C

reasoning: teacher says the power supply fan blows air out of the power supply not the case. i say thats bs because the air the psu blows out is coming from inside the case, for it to be false the air blown out of the psu would have to come from outside, seperating it from the case's airflow.

Original ATX spec called for the psu fan to blow into the case to cool the processor. I've seen some Dells and other OEMs that did this but all recent ones have had the psu fan blowing out of the case.

While the questions aren't retarded, they are very poorly worded. This is why going to English is important 😛

Well, 26. is obviously looking for the typical answer, even though technically you could do a video card in a PCI slot. I'm not aware of any ISA video cards.

25. is right, my FSB on my other rig is 400mhz IIRC.

The ISA video cards were common in the 386 computers and earlier. There could have been present in some 486 as well

And they were great to keep around until a few years ago since you could use them to recover from a bad motherboard firmware.

4 is actually d.
a. to a slight degree this is supposed to be true, few manufacturers agree, so they are arranged so they don't short out with each other or otherwise have trace lenght issues.

b. the power supply fan does blow air out of the case and not into the case

c. same number of wires from at to atx (depends on the at manufacturer to add the "turbo" switch

d. the position of the powers supply and drives are coincidental, the psu is located at the top to proved positioning of the fan to remove heat from the uppermost portion of the case, this actually increases the lengths of power cables from the at standard.

25. no answer is correct
all of these are typical frequency's found on various buss's even on modern day system boards

a. 100mhz old fsb, also still used on eide channels
b. 133mhz used on the latest eide channels
c. 166mhz fsb used on many modern processors
d. 400mhz fsb (actually quad pumped 100mhz) used on older p4's

26. should have been d. all of the above.

the question didn't specifically state that the expansion slot was deducated for video cards only.

29. you just got plain wrong, the bios stores the information in flash, the cmos is where the bios information is copied and run from, when a cmos device loses power it loses any stored data. the correct answer is d.

I would argue with the instructor about the answers you actuall got right of those. (26., and argue that 24. had no correct answer.)

and yes I am a systems engineer.

25. Which is NOT a typical speed of a motherboard?

a. 100 MHz

b. 133 MHz

c. 166 MHz

d. 400 MHz

answer is C on the answer key.
I put D
reasoning: what i'm saying is the ACTUAL fsb speed is 166mhz on an athlon xp system, the "400mhz" bus speed either comes from old quad pumped 100mhz p4 systems or an athlon xp3200+ etc... 400mhz either means 100mhz x4 or 200mhz x2

26. Which type of expansion slot is used for a video card?

a. PCI

b. AGP

c. ISA

d. All of the above.

answer is B on the answer key.
I put D
reasoning: I've HAD pci video cards, and i've seen isa video cards.

29. The CMOS configuration chip ____.

a. contains information about how memory is allocated

b. retains its data when the computer is turned off

c. contains information about the computer's hardware

d. Both A and C

answer is D on the answer key.
I put B
reasoning: while a and c are true, b is also true when you have a good cmos battery (which you should) and it seemed like the simplest answer to me.

I got a few more wrong on the test, but I know why I got those wrong. These four questions are very "iffy" to me and a few other students in the class...

I have PCI video card in my system right now and could probably go dig up an ISA one from my "Box of old parts".
THe power supply blowing air thing is absolutely retarded (sounds like the teacher is too).
CMOS chips DO retain their information when the computer is off (assuming it's not a bokrne PC with missign parts like the battery). So it would have to be either All or at least B.

Sounds like the teacher that made that test is a dumbass.

I had a class (well actually, quite a few) like this. I tried arguing at first... but its a waste of time. Just memorize whatever the book/teacher says and get 100% regardless of whether the info is right or wrong. Just accept the fact that the teacher is a moron and get over it.

If they are online tests, then maybe you can outsmart the teacher and have the test answer itself ... that's what I did... the teacher could never figure out how I did it... lol.

edit: its a class at a community college, i need it for a cert (hey, don't make fun! 😛 )

You don't *need* a class for a cert. I've gotten tons of certifications and haven't had a class yet.

Best of luck to you. 🙂
