It's a top of the line front MTB derailleur.

uh-huh. Now WTF is that? 😉

from the looks, it's the part that flexes a bit in order to make a bike change gears.

Join a team. I get a lot of stuff at shop cost for being an active member of my club's racing team.

That's what sucks! I love riding solo 🙂. I probably should try some amatuer races though. Who knows, I might be good at it!

Racing's pretty fun really. You pay money to suffer like a dog, then drink beer with your teammates and bitch about it afterwards. Sometimes, you win stuff. 😀

Nothin beats a cold beer after a long ride (well, after lots of water 😉)

At that price range, any of the "big" brands will be fine. Not a tremendous amount of variation at that price point. The biggest question will probably be whether you want a full-on mountain bike, or a hybrid bike.

we mainly want something we can ride on the bike paths. Though i do enjoy actually going "off road".

I had a older Schwinn High sierra that was great. it was light and rugged. to bad it broke when someone hit me while i was riding.

I bought a trek 500 and i didn't like it.

We sell a LOT of Haro bikes.

My last two MTB's have been Haro's!

Brutskend sorry for attempting to highjack the thread 😀

but thanks to you and newbiepcuser seen a few i will look at.

this one looks nice. I just want something that is comfortable to ride. I do not enjoy riding 10 speeds. While i do not do a lot of off roading i do enjoy riding a few of the trails around here.

What the hell are you talking about? The two biggest component companies are (and have always been) foreign. This isn't cars, doofus.

Thanks, Captain Obvious

As far as I know, there aren't any U.S. manufacturers of decent bike component groups. Shimano and Campagnolo are the tops. There used to be SunTour but they went out in the early-mid 90s IIRC.

I guess it would be like this, if the only U.S. made car was a Geo Metro but you could get a Lexus from Japan or a Ferrari from Italy for slightly more money which would you chose?

SunTour was japanese. There have (to my knowledge) never been any large US component manufacturers. There are US component makers, but they're mostly small high-end stuff like Paul's.

Hey, if Americans actually liked bikes there might actually be demand for US-made stuff, but there isn't. Jeff's making it sound like some US company is being outsold by foreign goods when there is no US company.

Haha... this thread reminded of a time about 3 yrs ago where I were really into bikes. Having spended over a thousand to buy two pre-build bike, one for my wife and one for me, I still not satisfied. After reading a lot of those bikes sites, I decided to build my own. Got a TI frame ebay, the fork from one site and the wheels on the other. I were tried to save a buck or two, but I were only kidding myself. After all the stuffs got in, from the bike stand to books and over a thousand dollar poorer, I built my first bike. It take me a whole day, but I were very proud of myself after I built it.
In less than a week and having rode it a few times, I felt flat on my face because my one of my shoes still stucked to the peddle when I had to stop. This told you how novice I were with bikes. I wrist hurt like a b*tch for a few weeks. My brother told me there might be a micro facture, but I never got it x-ray, heh... As for the bike, it sat in the garage to this day. I kept telling myself one of this day I will bring it out and tune it and start riding again. At least I did remove that stupid peddle that costed me around 80 bucks or something and replaced with the regular one. No chance of my shoes got stuck again with these peddle. 🙂

I know Suntour was Japanese. I still have Suntour Superbe Pro on my road bike. It's decent stuff.

I was trying to think of a US company that made components but I cannot come up with any. I just thought there must have been one at some point and the analogy sounded good to me. 😛

I guess it was a stupid analogy.

There are some smaller ones like Paul's and SRAM before they got bought up, but no major ones that I can think of. Americans just don't give a sh*t about bikes once they hit 9 years old for the most part so there aren't many major frame manufacturers any more and there really never were any component manu's.
