Browser tab management

If I'm doing a web browsing, forum, internet session. I think after about 2 hours I end up with on average 15-25 tabs open. At this point I'm like, my god, what have I done! And I check them all and close the ones I don't want.

What about you guys?

Open forum, open threads I want in new tabs, finish thread, close each tab as I go. I don't browse anything else until I'm done with that forum. Don't really use tabs often for non-forums.

You sir are a tactician. I envy that tab management.

What about online shopping though? Tabs for different products, then tabs for price searching, tabs for product reviews. It adds up quickly. Sometimes I do it while on forums, and it just gets out of control fast!

That sounds like work.

there was a time when I was stuck on IE when FF became a big thing with tabs. I didn't see the benefit. With forums, it's a huge time-saver compared to opening each thread and hitting back for the main page listing when you were done. I don't know what you mean.

I also use mouse gestures... up for new tab, down for close tab. Ctrl-click opens a link in a new tab. Can't get any quicker.

When I sit down to web browse, I will have 5 tabs in 2 minutes easy. At the end of my session I average 14 tabs- but I peak around 30.

And I have been doing that since before Firefox was called Firefox. I am a tab addict.

I also leave like ten programs running in the background. I manage my computer resources like a hoarder manages their storage space.

I do about the same thing. Try to keep them to a minimum if I can though. I'm super OCD about computer resources, even when my machine is uber.

except while online shopping, it's rare for me to have more than 5-6 tabs open.

I always have tabs open for: Gmail, Facebook, AT, and another forum I post at.

I'll open new tabs to check news or read articles, but I generally close tabs when I finish with them.

obviously the exception is online shopping, when I'll have a dozen different tabs open reading reviews, comparing prices, etc.

30! Nice.

I'd say you would rate fair to good at tab management then.

ever been to wikipedia?

I tend to have dozens of tabs open for weeks, at least until Chrome crashes. :/ There's not much logical reason for that many; I stopped using browser bookmarks years ago.

I set the options to open windows instead of tabs, and I close most windows soon as I'm done with their specific website, returning to my one true window / single tab firefox session.

Damn, guess I'm just an exception. Online bidding sites (mostly estate auctions), 30+ tabs open. Amazon seller's page with 4 tabs open, here at AT with 13 tabs open currently, email page open along with craigslist--total of 4 tabs on that one, UPS and USPS tracking page open with 6 tabs currently, two pages for news with about a dozen tabs open between the pages, some research page open for vintage item research with about 15 tabs open......and that's right this moment.

I've had over 15 pages with well over 100 tabs open simultaneously. Doesn't matter much except after a day, FF with its memory leak can consume well over 1.2GB of memory and it sorta slows a tad, esp. if Flash use is involved.

Yep, I sit at around 30 open full time. Easier than bookmarking/ searching for links.

I am terrible with tabs. I currently have 44 open across 5 windows. I'll open a bunch on the forums I frequent and and my email. Then if I am researching something its not uncommon for me to do a Google search and open about 10 tabs in 5 seconds for things that look like they might be helpful. Then I get pulled away to work on something else and those tabs all stay open till I can work on it again. In the meantime I may need to look up something else which results in more Tab Sprawl.

at work, I'm actually pretty bad with tabs.

I have two browser windows open.

one is our ticketing system... when I first sign online in the morning, I run down the list of all still-open tickets created during the night/early morning, eyeball anything that looks important/critical/easy/interesting, and open them all into new tabs. I'll then spend the rest of my day working through the tabs and closing them as I go.

in the second window, I have all my personal tabs (gmail, AT, etc) plus tabs for whatever client records I'm working with (and those I'll generally leave open as reminders until the issue is resolved)

15 tabs open at the moment and today's been relatively quiet.

I'll often end up with 100 or more in a couple of browser windows. I just close em without checking them at all. Who has time for that? Every once in a blue moon I'll lose a forum comment that I didn't complete. Big deal.

I am huge on multi-tasking different parts of my life (research at work, research for home lab, research for purchasing decisions, research for academics) and usually hover around 80-90 tabs open at a time.

I use Chrome, and use TooManyTabs to allow me to search and suspend tabs as needed. It's the best thing since sliced bread for me!

Ahhh memories. I will never forget when I upgraded my desktop to 4GB (back in 2006 when 4GB was a bigger deal) and my excuse was "I am not using less tabs, and I can't fix Firefox, so lets just make the pigpen bigger....."

I can open ~9 tabs before they start scrolling off the edge of the screen. That seems like an obvious limiter to me. You can't work with tabs you can no longer see, and the extra clicks involved in revealing them eliminates the convenience of having tabs. I tend to keep them at around 9-10 open tabs at any given time because of that.

I had no idea people got up to 100 tabs open. Wowza.

By checking them I just mean reading the few words I can see in the tab itself and either closing it, or deciding to just eliminate everything. Like oftentimes I will be at like 15 tabs and close the ones furthest right and get back down to the 5 or so I was flipping between most recently.

i have close to two thousand tabs at the moment. thank goodness for bartab addon that keeps most of them unloaded.

Home - I'm never above 3 or 4 tabs. I only really open tabs if I'm browsing and want to look something up or open a thread/page to review later. Also helpful when researching purchases.

Work - I'll easily end up with 20+ tabs open across 2 or 3 instances of 2 or 3 browsers. Consulting in IT means I'm generally doing several things at once and testing various things across browsers, while leaving certain tabs open all day for reference.
