Browser doesn't work but MSN works

So when I'm doing torrents, I can't seem to use the internet browser, but MSN works like a charm. It's just a little laggy in the message sending and receiving area. The torrent speeds are great and everything, but if I can't use the browser it, then becomes a pain. I usually have to reset my router twice daily just so I can surf the web while downloading. But, if I connect to online games such as CS, I don't need to go and reset the router since the connection to the server is established quickly. Plus, my pings are always below 100. Got any advice on what could be wrong?

I'm using a WRT54GS v.7 stock firmware with WPA and it's on channel 1. QoS is enabled, and I have optimized gaming applications. My network adapter is a D-Link DWL-G520 that I bought a long time ago when I had a DI-624.

Thanks.

Do you have speed control settings in your TOrrent program? TOrrents are notorious for using up your entire upload bandwidth which will basically kill your entire connection for most everything else.

Go into the torrent program and find the option where you can set the maximum upload speed it can use. Depending on your connection, set it to under half of your total speed. THen see how things go. Then you can adjust the speed up or down until you get the best results from both programs.

The upload speeds are set to 10kB/s while download speeds are at unlimited. Even though the download speeds are at unlimited, rarely does the torrents exceed a combined of 100kB/s except I'm downloading anime.

Router resetting fixes the problem, but the problem comes back if I'm doing lots of torrenting.

Even though I can't surf the Internet, MSN works and games like CS will work as well.

Do you have the ports forwareded correctly? I had similar issues and the only thing that fixed it was making sure my ports were properly forwarded.

stop torrenting...I know there IS legal content, but not that much.

Otherwise, a more robust router (PC based are the best) or limit your upload/download and connections in your client.

Yep, I have port forwarded correctly. All of my comps are on static IPs except for the laptop.

Most of my torrents are done on the ethernet connected PC. By more robust router, do you mean one that runs like Linux OS?

more robust meaning not SOHO free after rebate junk. It's not the OS it runs, but the hardware more so. Those small routers run low speed asics with very little processing power.

Well I won't be allowed to spend that much money on a router.

BTW, this happened to me again. For the whole day today, even with little to no torrenting, I can't surf the internet but MSN and games like CS work. I'm gonna update my firmware later tonight.

Ok, the same thing happened again, but this time there were no torrents running. I had to reset the router in order to surf the net properly. Any help or comments are greatly appreciated.

i remember this happening to me. you have put the wire in the wrong socket in the wall. (telephone, instead of ethernet)

I have exactly the same problem. My internet connection have worked correctly for yearrs but since a couple of months back http(browsing the web) stops working but, msn/torrent/limewire etc works like a charm. This often happens when the internet connection is heavy loaded but sometimes it comes just randomly. The only way to fix it is to restart the router or the modem. This is extremely irritating. There must be someone on the net with a good network knowledge that recognizes this problem?

if you have the same router maybe the router sucks, also. They could both suck even if you have different ones. Usually if you have to un plug the modem and plug it back in to get it working it is the modem being the suck. Get a better modem or use an old computer as a router.

This is jus tmy own experience though take it with a grain of salt.

The funny thing is that it works both when I only reboot the modem AND when I only reboot the router...
And How come MSN works without any troubble, the same with any other program like, uTorrent, limewire etc. It's only the webbrowsing thats fucked up.

It may be that the modem you are using does not like torrents. Try connecting a machine directly to the modem. Run all your torrents and see if the problem re-appears. If it does not then its your router.

If its the router then you need another one.

It may be that you have some malware that is slowing the connection, or messing up the config for you browser. If the problem occurs again stop your torrents and see if your browsing is still afftected. If it is run a network trace using wireshark (its free) and see how much traffic you are sending. If you stop the torrents and the browsing there should not be much network traffic. If there is loads chances are your PC has something nasty. There are quite a few nasties that are not picked up by scanning even with 3 different scanners.

I use torrents heavily at home on a Netgear WGT624 router and since the cable modem was changed its been running great. I do not use QoS. The only problem I have with the Netgear is the wireless connection to my laptop. These days I just use wired.

The last nastie I had I reloaded the PC as nothing would find it. The nastie was just sending out loads and loads of DNS queries. I tried up to date scans with adaware, spybot and MS defender but none of them picked it up. The symptoms were about 1 minute after connecting the ethernet to the internet the CPU usage went to 100%, but no process showed high CPU usage. A wireshark trace showed up all the DNS queries. Clean install of XP Pro solved the problem.

The modem I'm using is provided by Rogers, and it's been running great. No matter how much torrents I put through it, I won't experience any internet lag. It probably is the router slowing down my connections. I tried a firmware update, but it didn't help a lot. But currently, it seems that while doing a tons of torrents, I can still surf the internet without any problems.

I'm pretty sure that I don't have malware in my computer since the CPU usage is at around 20% when running torrents. Since I don't have any slowdowns when I'm running torrents, it may just be that the torrents are using up all my internet connection.

I only suggested the modem because that is what happened to me on NTL (now Virginmedia). The older ambit 120 modem would slow down or crash when many torrents were going. NTL's view was that torrents were illegal so they were not going to change it. It then turned out the the modem did cause problems with the 10 Mbs service and so they changed it. Since then things have been fine appart from running low on disk space.
I've seen 1.6 MBs on a single torrent recently.

I hope it stays sorted.

Rob.
