I haven't been attacked yet. I'm still building up a bit of defence anyway, just in case.
The best defence is just to make it unprofitable for someone to attack you. Spend your resources, and if you're saving up, build some defence, so that to a small person, it's seen as a harder target than some unprotected n00bs, and to a big person, its seen as a waste of fleet for a measly amount of resources.
The 100member thing might be a thing too, i for one tend to ignore people in alliances, unless they're in it by themselves. I mean, people don't mess with the S.A alliance I presume, as even if they had 140 members who're n00bs, the other 20 or so could have a whole load of points. hehe. so in our case, some of us could be poweful and just the number of n00bs 'drag us down'
Either way, get raiding ASAP, it's much quicker. Also, if you have deuterium, it's probably worth offering a trade, as the 4:2:1 m:c
