They seem to favor cardboard when dwelling in human residences, possibly because it mimics the rotting tree bark which they inhabit naturally. They also tend to be found in shoes, inside dressers, in bed sheets of infrequently used beds, in stacks of clothes, behind baseboards, behind pictures and near furnaces. The common source of human-recluse contact is during the cleaning of these spaces, when their isolated spaces are suddenly disturbed and the spider feels threatened. Unlike most web weavers, they leave these webs at night to hunt. Males will move around more when hunting, while the female spiders tend to remain nearer to their webs.

I recently bought a house myself and there is a spider problem. I need to make a parody of the movie 300 with me killing them all.

Emptied a can of raid in the basement and crawlspace, and a bit upstairs + got it profesionally sprayed outside.

Now I only find dead ones. I still have a full can of raid ready in case. This is MADNESS!

Oh and this is the type of spiders I had to deal with. Been told they are brown recluse but also been told they might be wolf spiders. I seen other spiders too, such as black spiders and smaller brown ones. Do you have a crawlspace? if yes, check for something like this.

*I may not be held responsible for causing nightmares with my pictures of giant spiders and/or bites. Sleep tight!

They're found outside the areas on that map. There was a local woman who was bitten by one (western NY) - they captured the spider for identification.

If you're that concerned why not call in a professional exterminator? The problem with eliminating spiders is that they're mainly good- and they get rid of all the other pests people don't want around. I don't really kill them, I basically just shoo them out of the way (since I have pets I put them outside to keep my cat from eating them :p).

I don't give a fuck if they're good insects, I don't want any in my house. They're Kill on Sight.

OK you couldn't PAY me to go in there! And I don't usually mind spiders. If I can see them that is. The thought that they might be "somewhere" freaks me out.

I read a story in the newspaper out here months ago, maybe even late last year. A dude who was paralyzed was bit by one of these spiders, and after wards had the ability to walk. They didn't go into detail about how well he could walk, but to have legs that never works turn into even semi function legs is craziness.

Well at least you don't have to contend with Brazilian Wandering Spiders.

Among the other things their bite can do...

Aside from causing intense pain, the venom of the spider can also cause priapism - uncomfortable erections that can last for many hours and lead to impotence. A component of the venom (Tx2-6) may eventually be used in erectile dysfunction treatments.

Scary. I used to have to dodge them all the time at the plant I worked at.
The only way to effectively get rid of them, is to call in an air strike.

Damn I am so glad I live in a country where there are only 3 venomous spider species, of which only one is lethal, and with only 2 recorded deaths in the past 200 years. So fucking glad.

Cockroaches are one thing but if I had two of these in my house I'd fumigate the ever-loving sh*t out of it. These are no damn joke. Go hardcore on their ass NOW.

Friend got bit by one in college on his inner thigh. The inflammation ended up covering most of his right quad and hamstring... and doctors even mentioned amputation to him I think to save his wenis. It was not pretty.

It bears repeating. Are you sure they are brown recluses? BR's are like Black Widows with non-hairy, shiny legs and a fiddle on the top of their heads that starts at their eyes. Too many folks call any brown spider a Recluse.
