Miami's a shithole overall - but you are right- the beach areas are tame.

From the description, it seems like it wasn't. Just one of those "I have a gun, therefore you should give me your shit" kind of thing...

Better than New Orleans muggings, when there is usually a group of them, at least 1 armed, and then they beat the shit out of you after they take your stuff.
