FWIW, I checked with several Staples B&M stores in Baltimore and none had it in stock. It's been discontinued and is being replaced with the HL-2170W which features built-in 802.11 wireless along with an ethernet port and sells for about $150.

These are now available online at Staples for $99.99 and delivery is free. The will be going on sale for $79.99 next week however supplies are short because it has been discontinued. However, if you purchase now Staples will price match their $79.99 price appearing in next week's ad after it appears.

which really begs the question: for a B&W printer for home, do you really want to spend even $80? The Samsung @ Fry's is regularly under $50, and color lasers are regularly between $180 and $200 on sale. I haven't seen a cheaper price for color yet, but if I do, I'll definitely buy one.

sigh...the cartridges for the samsung cost more that the printer...

The best bang for a your buck on a laser printer i feel is the brother 7820n (299.00 in store but can be had for 199-150.00 on sale.)

This one is a network printer.

You're correct, wired network vs USB for the Samsung. 20 ppm vs 25 ppm for the Samsung. No idea on initial page printing on the Brother, 8.5s on the Samsung.

The toner cartridges aren't issues for me. When the printer's cheaper than the refill, just buy a new printer. For those looking for a bottom $ printer, the Samsung on sale might be a better deal.

Post a link. I don't see it on their website. I hope your not talking about a B&M deal, because most people don't have a Fry's near them. They are only in 9 states. Pretty small compared to Staples or Office Depot.

they have been B&M deals. Ad comes out tomorrow, sometimes they're good on outpost.com/Frys.com as well.

I'm interested now because my last last just died, and my ink jets are always drying out (annoying as hell, good thing the last 3 were essentially free).

As someone else noted, the Brother HL-2070N is a network printer which, unlike a strictly USB printer, can be printed to by any computer on a network regardless of what other computers are turned off or on. Although it also has a USB port and you can hook it up that way instead of making it part of your network, I don't know why you would. A USB printer attached to a computer can only be accessed by other computers on a network if the computer the printer's attached to is running. Computers on the network can also view a network computer's status and setting controls through the printer's built-in web page.

If you don't have a network, don't spend your money on a network capable printer. If you do have a network, this is an excellent price for a network printer.

I've been looking for a relatively inexpensive replacement for my dying Lexmark Optra S 1855. I looked at this printer, but I really need one with duplexing also.

I saw the Brother HL-5250DN at the Egg (on sale through the weekend for $196 with free shipping). This is clearly a lighter weight unit than the Lexmark, but that's OK - I don't really need the Lexmark's duty cycle. However, there are fairly mixed reviews on it - I'll ignore the complaints about paper curl, but I'm concerned about complaints about reliability. Also, looking at consumables (toner carts and drum units) for it, they appear pretty expensive if you go OEM and there were complaints about actual vs claimed achievable page counts. Costs not so bad for compatibles (which is all I've used in the Lexmark), but if there are complaints about OEM parts, I have a hard time believing that compatibles or remanuf stuff would be better.

So...
Has anyone used the 5250DN and have any reports on it? Failing that, any suggestions for another inexpensive (say <$250) mid-duty, mid-speed (20ppm+) duplexing network printer?

Still at NE as of 1/4

I picked up this printer the Saturday after Thanksgiving at OD for $79 and it works great. The ability to network a laser at this price was the deal maker for me. It's a great for anyone needing low cost B&W printing. Text is nice and sharp. Be warned, it sucks a lot of juice when it's warming up - probably more than most in this class.
