I jumped on this deal. Only to find out this printer would not switch resolutions in Win2K :|. Maybe its a driver problem, I have yet to figure it out.

Configuration:

Win2K (SP3)
latest driver from brother's site
32MB SIMM from Crucial
Brother ML1440 Printer
Running this through parallel port 🙁.

Anyone else have problems with my setup? WinME and Brother HL1440 not waking up, etc? There shouldn't be a reason that TWO different USB cables won't work on it right? I've used them for other machines just fine.

I thought the latest service pack of Win2K is SP2?

😀 sorry missed that one its SP2 🙂 but I'm not quite satisfy with my printer at this point since the quality stays at 300dpi 🙁 even my 6 years old HP Laserjet 4 prints better than it 🙁.

SCSIfreek, can you elaborate on what happened when you tried to increase the resolution to 1200x600dpi in Printing Preferences?

Also, were you able to set the printer memory to 34MB in Printing Preferences?

I have exactly the same configuration as you (W2K SP2, 32MB SIMM from Crucial, using parallel port) and have no problem printing at max resolution.

OK guys I was able to order the HL-1440 printer last night and the $50.00 coupon still worked. Paid $212.00 shipped.

Now for a few questions. Since The coupon was about to expire I didnt have much time to read many reviews or check on a few things before buying the unit. I pretty much went buy other peoples reviews here. 😉

What printer drivers did anyone use for the drivers for XP machines? I looked on there webpage briefly and didnt see XP driver for the 1440 but I belive I seen some for the 1550 or something like that. Also you can buy a added on card for networking. Checking prices now on it. Im wanting to try and stay away from running alot wires if possiable. Does anyone know if a Jet Direct Box would work for this unit with a Netgear RT314 router? If anything how would be the best way to network this printer is what Im asking? I have 2 Win-XP machines and 1 Win-2000 machine I have them all networked together now and would like to add this printer.

Sorry for posting all this here, I just reposted the networking issue in the networking forums.
Thanks!

anyone know what kind of 32MB SIMM works in this? Just any ole 32MB SIMM? Does it need to be EDO or Parity or Non-parity or anything? People keep telling me SIMMs need to be installed in pairs.. and I'm like... well.. I can't... it only has one slot....

If you use Windows on all your computers, the easiest thing to do is to just make one of them the print server by hooking up the printer as "local printer". Then install the Brother driver on all the rest of the computers configured to access the print server. This way, as long as your print server machine is up, your printer will be accessible to all the rest of the computers on your network via Windows network printing.

Other ways to hook up the printer on a network include:

- use the SMC Barricade router which has a built-in print server
- if you have Linux machines, use Samba to set up a print server
- buy that optional external print server module from Brother. It's pretty expensive though. I checked buy.com and they sell it for $285.

Both FPM and EDO SIMM will work. My sister pulled a stick of 32MB EDO memory from her old Pentium 100MHz computer and it worked perfectly in the HL-1440.

Someone mentioned you have to make sure the dimension of the memory stick fits in the printer slot.

ps. I just noticed it seems my message count is stuck at 484, no matter how many messages I write. Anyone else has a stuck message counter, or is it just me?

I picked up the Lexmark E210 for $100 after $50 rebate which is basically the exact same printer as the Samsung ML1210.

As for toner cost... instead of buying cartridges I just buy toner refills. The refills cost about $32-$36 and you can get them from either http://www.tonerkits.com/ or http://www.tonerrefillkits.com/

I just ordered from Tonerkits.com and got their package today. Paid $36 for 2 bottles of toner refill.

Perfectly happy with my E210/ML1210 considering I only paid $100 for it... the $50 Lexmark rebate is still good, so you can still get the E210 for dirt cheap.

BTW, I ended up canning my USB cables and got a Parallel cable... now the printer works fine and wakes up on demand. Stupid USB... ... when are they gonna make firewire printers..? heh... or wireless... muahahaha... ok.. i'm done.

docinthebox thats the problem Im trying to avold having a print server running in order to print from the other pcs if possible. I have a few old 486 PCs. Could I load Linux and Samba and leave it running all the time? Could be alot of work but save alot of money and this way I could leave it running all the time and place it out of the way? Espically the price you show for the external print device.

BTW..I read somewhere NOT to use the CD that comes with the printer for XP machines? Because it doesnt work properly or doesnt support XP and get drivers from there website or will XP find the device and load drivers? What OS are you running just curious?

BTW thanks for your reply! Its should arrive next Monday. Trying to get everything in order before hand. 🙂

does anyone has experience refill laser toner ?

is it easy ?

coz I owe a lexmark e210 but toner is freaking expensive and I see 2 bottles of refill like $25-35 in ebay...

?

Yes you can just set up a Samba server on an old 486 and just leave the box running. Doesn't even need to hook it up to a monitor once you get it all set up.

Or you can get this Barricade router with print server at Dell Home for $74 - 10% off = $66.60.

As for the CD that comes with the printer, I think they have updated the CD to include the XP driver. When I got my HL-1440 last year, the XP driver wasn't on the CD I don't think, because the driver was so new. But I can't believe the inventory these days still don't have the XP driver on the CD.

I'm running W2K myself.

Good luck. Hope you enjoy using the printer as much as I do! 🙂

docinthebox, does your sister have another 32MB SIMM in her P100 by chance? heh...

Yes she does. I think she had 128MB in her P100 which by the standards of those days is *a lot* of memory. (That's 6-7 years ago I think.)

heh... it's the equivalent of having around a gig of ram today... does it print faster or better with the memory upgrade?

It prints both faster (~15 ppm) and better (1200x600dpi) with additional memory. Also, your computer gets fewer interrupts from the driver, esp. when printing large files.

Bigempty - I have refilled toner cartridges before too . Sometimes you really do need to rebuild them ( change , wiper blades , HEPA vaccum out old toner etc ) . These guys that sell you the bottle of toner and instructions are really making a killing ( about $15-20 for bottle of toner which costs about $ 3.00) but it is hard to find it without committing for a large minimum order ( like $ 100.00) from a toner cartridge remfg supply house .

Just finished a 3,300 page job with this printer (don't ask). I love it. Best laser I have owned. The printer has printed over 20,000 pages and I have the 30th and the 19,785th page and they look damn close. Love it I say.

It still says "Save $50 with Instant Rebate" although there seems to be some glitch on their website and the IR is not calculated into the final price. You probably have to call them up.

Also, I'm not sure if there's still any $50 off $250 coupon code around. Doing a search on fat wallet would be your best bet.

Good luck!
