My 1210 came with a full toner/drum. At least I am pretty sure because there is no mention of it being a starter cartridge.

Come to think of it, on some rewiews, some people have said that an extra toner came with the Samsung which would explain a starter cartridge (1K pages) and a regular one included. I guess I didn't get a second one because they must be including full cartridges with all printers. GundamF91, did you get one or two toners with your printer?

My toner came with only 1 toner. I thought it was full too....but when you read the User's Guide in CD-ROM...under \1200\ENG\MANUAL\, pages 17 and 72 talk about the toner shipped with the printer is only good for 1000 pages. My toner is marked ML-1210D1(XAA) if that makes a difference. I think Samsung used to do "extra value" package to promote the new printer. But I think they've stopped doing that, my box didnt' have a sticker saying "extra toner" etc.

As for the Brother, while it's shipped with 3000pg rated TN430 toner, it doesn't mean they wouldn't just half fill the toner, which is something Samsung's doing. docinthebox, esquared, how many pages have you printed using your printers? We'll only know for sure til someone use up the original toner.

I just finished my original toner cartridge. Didn't keep close track of page count but I must have gone through at least 3-4 500-packs printer paper and I was printing double-sided. So I'm pretty sure I got more than 3000 pages, probably even >3500 pages.

I've only run around 500 pages so far so that's not an indication. I did check the toner in my 1210 and it reads ML-1210D1(XAA). I opened my replacement I purchased and it was labeled ML-1210D3(XAA), which would indicate I also have a starter toner since the D3 is a 3000 page toner cart. The D1 probably signifies a 1K toner. Oh well. I still like the printer.

I'm doin a cost analysis and I was wondering how many pages an average black epson or lexmark ink cartridge would get. My plan was to get the samsung and keep my epson around for hi-res jobs which are few.

I had looked at the Samsung and ended up grabbing a Brother HL-1450 last month. I don't regret it. It's absolutely silent while sitting at rest; I have it attached to my SMC Barricade print server and get first page out in under 15 seconds even when it's been sitting in powersave overnight.
I did upgrade my memory first thing... nice to note that it takes standard 72 pin SIMMs; be aware that they have to be the ones that are 1" tall, the taller ones will not fit.

Nekote and others who have his problem:

Regarding your printer driver problem with the Brother Laser... try this:

Go to the Printers folder

Right-click on the Brother

Choose Properties

Choose the DETAILS tab

Click the SPOOL SETTINGS button

Change the SPOOL DATA FORMAT setting from EMF to RAW.

Click OK till out.

No idea why, but this solves exactly the kind of problem you reported on networked printers.

One thing you guys might want to know is that even though Brother advertises teh 1440 as having an ECP port, it appears that it does not. Save your money and buy plain parallel cables. Or use USB for much faster printing times and lower CPU usage.

Bump.......I just bought this one, so it's still available if you're quick. Will return the Samsung back to Costco this weekend. The cheap toner is just better.....plus I have some SIMM around.

Bought one for work, but I also have the Samsung 1210. They're both great.

BTW - that DCP-1000 combo in the flyer caught my eye but I guess its not the same engine as the
HL-1440 . Also there were no more Samsung ML1210 s at Costco strores in the Atlanta metro area .

I got this printer a few months ago on a pricematch deal, and it works great. Normally, I only buy HP laser printers, but the price was just too good on this one. So far, the Brother HL-1440 hasn't let me down.

Click below if you need the coupon for Office Max.

hey... got some questions on this printer.. I just bought it... but it sux right now! It won't wake up! And even when I press the button the computer doesn't recognize it until after I turn it on and off with the powerbutton. I tried different USB cables, DLed the newest drivers, etc, etc... called tech support, but they don't know either. ANyone have insight to this?

My Brother laser printer wakes up and goes to sleep just fine, using Windows XP Pro.

In fact I leave the laser printer turned on 24/7, whenever I print it wakes up and after 5 minutes of inactivity it goes back to sleep shutting off everything including the fan.

WinME... I don't understand it.. it did work briefly after switching USB cables... but stopped again. The tech support guy just claimed that this was a Windows problem... that windows can't wake up printers through USB correctly. But I've used other printers before without this problem.

I think I had the same problem with the HL-1440 USB driver a while ago too. Wasn't sure if it was a problem with the driver itself, or if it's a resource conflict. I switched to using the parallel port and it's been working great since. Same printing speed as far as I can tell.

There have been reports on the newsgroups that the HL-1240 driver can be used for the HL-1440 too. That fixed several well-known problems with the HL-1440 like the envelope printing issue, and the issue with printing in stamps.com. The only downside I can think of, is you probably can get as high as 600x600dpi resolution (highest resolution on HL-1240), and not the 1200x600dpi resolution of the HL-1440.
