It comes with Brother's regular sized toner cartridge. I think it runs around 2500 sheets. OM has these for 49.99 and they have a larger sized cartridge (double toner, I think) for 79.99. Brother at least gives you a decent sized starter cart compared to the Samsung model, whose starter cartridge does a maximum of 1K copies. I picked this up last Dec for my sister at OM for 200 + tax with a 50 GC. It comes with 2 Megs of memory but is upgradeable to 34 megs. It needs 10Megs minimum to run at 1200 DPI. I threw an old 16 meg Simm and this printer is fast and makes excellent copies.

Hey Rossman, did you finally buy this printer???

A word of warning--these printers work just great, but the drum unit is not designed to last long. I was thrilled with my printer until the drum unit died about the same time as my first toner cartridge. A replacement drum unit is almost as much as the entire printer. I dug through my manual, and found out that Brother considers this a perfectly normal occurrence. Called them, and they told me the same thing--it was supposed to last around 8000 pages, but it only lasted about 3000--oh well, too bad. I then found out that many Brother owners had the same problem. This thing is either designed really badly, or perfectly--you have to replace the drum unit once a year at about $200 a pop.

doh. just bought 2 of them.

*edit* after some digging inthe forums, it looks like i can get drums for like $100 so its not so bad
my current printer eats ink at 60bux a pop and it suxs!

Nope, since I already own a perfectly working Brother HL-1240. The toner cartridge is still good as of today, more than 2 years from the initial purchase date.

Of course I onlyprint like 25 pages a month but this is incredible.

I think the drum for the HL-1440 is supposed to last for 20,000 pages, according to Brother's description.

Mine's seems to be working pretty well so far. I've printed about 2,500 double-sided pages by now. Both the original toner cartridge (which is rated for 3,000 pages) and the drum are still working fine.

By the way, I just noticed that buy.com raised the price of the DR-400 drum from $104 to $117. The price hike probably occurred last week, as I remember it was still $104 when I checked the week before.

If you live in California like I do, you might want to buy from CDW instead. They sell the drum for $115 + $5.50 shipping = $120.50 shipped. You save on sales tax.

The Brother site does say that the drum is rated at 20,000 pages but that is under ideal conditions. They go on to say that the actual number of pages may be significantly less.
Any way, I ordered one last week and it is scheduled for delivery Tuesday.
When I upgraded to Windows XP everything was compatible or had new drivers for XP, except for my PagePro 1100L. So this was a good deal for me since the PagePro did everything I wanted from a laser printer and I can continue to user it with a second 98SE system.
With the money saved, I went ahead and ordered the 32MB upgrade from Crucial, it is on my desk right now awaiting the 1440.😀

This is an awesome deal on an awesome printer. I got mine for $300, but that's ok, because its worth every penny.

word of caution (yes again) ... i picked up 1 of these printeres from dell a few months ago ... it is def fast for the price and adding memory was a snap (im sure we all have some EDO memory laying around) ... one thing i dont like about it is the XP driver using the USB ... whenever i reboot my workstation, the XP printer driver does not recognize the printer the second time around (listed as OFFLINE) ... i would have to unplug the USB cable from my hub and reinsert it (you can get around this issue by using the parallel port) ... the second issue is with turbotax ... the current driver listed on brothers website would not let me print from my turbotax software ... brothers tech support reply was to use the HP4 driver ... that "fixed" the problem but by using the HP4 driver, my 15ppm speed went out the window ... windows xp updater listed a new brother USB driver which corrected this issue for the most part (i still ran into a problem with turbotax printing strange characters on 1 of my returns) ... might be a isolated issue but ...

The 3000 page toner cartridge crapped out on me prematurely, at under 1500 pages. I was getting "dirty" printouts along with a line going down the page on the right or left side (i forgot). In any case, Brother's customer service was no help, they basically told me I just needed to clean the corona wire, which I already did. They later claimed it was just my PC malfunctioning; this of course makes no sense at all. Anyways, I read through the usenet and found out the toner cartridge might just be broken. So I bought a new catridge and the problem went away completely.

I got my printer today *dance*

i got to say i am happy as a clam. 😀

man it prints pages so fast and neat. 😛

THIS is w/o a single doubt the BEST printer I have ever heard of, maintenanced, or seen! 😀

I LOVE MY BROTHER HL-1440 😀

bchen74 I ran into the same problem...but the then accounting firm that we do tech support for did my taxes for me all over again, and saved me like $50 - so I never actually resolved the problem...I just got mad 😀 hehehehe

RossMAN U crackin' me up d00d! 😀 U know how fanatic I am about this thing! It's like Christianity vs. Islam if U ask me! 😀 hehehe... (whoops...did I just get all religious zealot on here? 😉) anyway, I AM a zealot about this printer b/c the memory upgrade was soooooooooooooooooooooooo easy, the ppm rate is TRULY close to what it's advertised, and I just replaced the FIRST toner cart. after about 1500 sheets. (from an OD $20 off of $75 coupon - cost computes to about $0.0083/page)! SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET Dealio if U ask me! 😀

I HOPE THAT MANY PEOPLE BUY THIS PRINTER AND USE IT ALL THE TIME B/C IT IS THE BEST PRINTER I'VE EVER OWNED! Additionally, I hope that your experience is the same as what I have had... 😉

God Bless
Tanner

vegetation, I got the same problem in the first week. A big line in vertical direction. I read the manual, did everything, tried to clean several area, shake the ink cartridge, whatever. I still can't remove it.

So I called OM to get a RMA. Three days later, the UPS driver came to my home to pick up my return.

Ordered one last nite. Great price, esp. if it lived up to the glowing reviews.

Hopefully much better than the alternative (getting an HP off of eGay).

Mine came today. Sweet unit. Fast. Crisp output.
Do wish the manual input slot had a tray or support to hold a few sheets / envelopes.

2MB memory pretty skimpy for base standard, these days.

XP driver installed fine, but driver not digitally signed.
Note - there is a different driver for 95/98/Me.

Lastly, ebates' email said that $6.54 was credited (3%).
(Was some BS about IE 6 had to be handled differently - thus the email)
Net: $211.42

this damn printer does not play well with turbo tax running XP. can print from every other program but turbo tax. good thing i still have my Hp photosmart printer, or uncle sam would've screwed me royally.
