Broken Vertex 2 replaced with Agility 3 (without asking)

Hi,

I had a vertex 2 that for some reason stopped to work (it also was one of those one could ask to have replaced for the old affaire about having less space than previous revision). I did the RMA and they took the drive asap.

Now I saw (tracking the delivery of the new drive to my home) that they are sending an Agility 3 in place of my vertex 2 and they haven't even asked to me before sending. It's my understanding that Agility is a cheaper line with cheaper memory and less performance and stability. Am I right? Should I ask for the proper replacement or the fact this drive is a new generation make things even (usually I don't think it works like that)?

I know the agility 3 is sata iii, but my mac has sata ii only so this is not important to me. I am quite sure I will not use this drive with my next computers, I am not content of OCZ in general (the previous drive broke after 2 month of light use), and anyway I will probably go with an Air as my next laptop, so integrated drive.

What do you suggest me to do? I am not an expert and I am not sure that what I think (agility 3 worst than vertex 2 and anyway ask me before replacing my product with a different one) is correct.

Thanks

While it's true that the Agility is a cheaper line, the difference is in speed and not quality. To that end it's a generation newer and that tends make up for the performance difference.

My advice would be to take a look at AnandTech Bench and decide if the performance difference is worth the time and effort it would take to send the Agility back to OCZ. OCZ should definitely have asked you, but I have to imagine they don't have a lot of Vertex 2s sitting around right now, so you may not be able to get one out of them.

I would still see it as a free upgrade, and be lucky that they didnt give you another SF 12xx drive. I RMA'd an agility 2, and got the same thing back, but would have gladly welcomed an agility 3. also, the one they sent me had issues too, until i managed to fix it.

Oh, and welcome to the forums!

It's a free upgrade be happy and update the firmware

I have a currrent Agility3 and am very happy with it, I wouldn't get too upset about it.

I suppose if you look into all the warranty gobbledy-beloved patriot, there is a phrase that They can substitute an equal or 'better' product on warranty claims.

You are right to question the level of support given for a product. You should be lucky because your drive broke and they replaced it? Does not compute.

According to benches, the Agility 3 is slower. Though it should be more stable than the Vertex, based on anecdotal reports. If that pleases you, keep the drive, if not, pitch a fit.

Its a free upgrade. OCZ should only be expected to provide an equivalent product. I think its very very hard to argue that the agility 3 isn't at least an equivalent product as your vertex 2.

I own an agility 3. Have been very pleased with it. Ifyou are really unhappy with the agility 3, why not sell it off and buy yourself a new vertex 2? I gather the asking price of the two drives will be about the same.

The more recent version of the Vertex 2(25nm nand compared to the earlier versions faster 34nm) will be slower than any similar capacity Agility 3 when used as an OS volume.

Not to mention the inherent throttling/panic locking and slower recovery known to exist with those first gens. That's a very worthwhile upgrade to be sure.

Yea, whatever....

What do you think the RAID0 will look like with the slowpoke on the end?

This is what everything looked like when everything was merry.
