Hi Everyone

My Sony CD-RW drive doesn't work anymore. I'm pretty sure it's because one of the pins came loose. How that happened, I'm embarrassed to say. I was wondering what I could do with it. It seems like such a waste to just throw it out. There must be some salvagable parts out of it. Can I sell it on Ebay? I remember once someone here sold a dead video card and explicity declared it was non-functional and sold "as-is." And of course he sold it for some good money.

Would any of you guys want to buy a broken CD-RW? Does Sony have some sort of raw-material recycling program I can send it to?

crantang, I'm not aware of any recycling programs by Sony, but you could try the FOR SALE/TRADE forum here, as sometimes many of us just need a single part off a computer component to fix a mistake we have made 😱 😉 As long as you say it's a dead/non-functional burner, it's w/in the rules, I hope this helps 🙂
 
If it's a current model you can probably get good $ for it on eBay. There's unscrupulous methods to getting it fixed, people just need a donor drive..

Sorry to keep everyone hanging. I think the first pin out of the IDE connection came loose. Kinda' like a loose tooth, but I didn't get a quarter for it.

Can I really fix it? I'm not sure I'd know how to. 🙁

 
Off topic, but one time I was rinsing with flouride mouthwash and opened my CD-RW slot to take out a cd. Wouldn't you know it suddenly I had to sneeze and there was no time for me to turn my head. A huge stream of flouride landed right in my CD-RW drive. It took me forever to clean it up, but once I did it worked fine. Just wanted to share, thanks.🙂

Thanks for sharing; I only wish I spat flouride onto my CD-RW and not lost a pin instead. Next time I rinse with mouthwash and pull a CD out of my drive and accidentally sneeze on it, I'll remember your words of wisdom.

Are you sure the pin is "loose", or is it just pushed into the back of the drive because the plug was upside down? In that case, you can just unscrew/open the case and gently push it back out. It happened once to a friend of mine.

Actually, the pin was bent and then broke off. If you open up the case and push the other half of it out and somehow replace it, could it be fixed?

I could replace it. But currently my expendable cash is gone, so I can't offer much for it.

What I'd do is simply part out another drive (ie: old ass one) and just desolder-resolder on a new connector. Be careful with the desoldering though, that's the hard part and you're likely to pull vias out if you're not careful.
