While installing a Cooler Master heatsink/cpu fan, I managed to break the middle tab off the socket (tension on the spring clip seem rather tight.

Am I totally screwed, or is there a fan (1 gig AMD Thunderbird) that clips on without using the middle tabs of the socket?

if you are VERY brave.

take a pure silver coin (quarter from 1950 or earlier(i think)
sand down and burnish. after face is gone and back...use 300 grit paper. and put a true shine. no nicks or dents allowed.

then apply the artic silver apoxy. to a heatsink, and put the mirror finished silver quarter on the heatsink. make sure both sides are done.

(also make sure the quarter and the heasink are aligned with the chip when turned around) just apply artic silver to the chip and apply.

if you are using a gorb. use the chrome orb. i think the 462-2 is best. mine runs at 5800 rpm.
anyway. you can turn the heatsink around if you use the quarter trick. some of my buddies did this and got about a 2-3c drop in temp.

good luck

Thanks, you don't know how relieved I am. I was having a really hard time with replacing my entire MB because of a freakin' little tab of plastic.

I found the Taisol CGK742092 for 22.95 @ Inflow Direct (via www.pricewatch.com). Lucky, I have enough room for this heat sink on my A7V. This will not only solve my broken socket dilemma (hooks to all three tabs), it also pumps 21+ CFM!!! :D
