Broken SATA Connector Pin

Dear All,

One of the pins in the connection interface of my SATA HDD has broken. The plug end of the pin was slightly bent upwards and on re-fitting the drive the pin was pushed backwards by the plug of the SATA cable. The movement caused the vertical part of the pin to break off. I have not yet tried the drive as I assum it will not operate. What remains of the pin is the setion that fits inside the plug of the SATA cable and the section that is soldered to the casing of the HDD.

Does anyone have any suggestions, bar repair by the manufacturer, how I might fix the problem?

For example, would it be possible to solder an appropriate piece of metal to the pin or would that be stupid!

Yours in anticipation,
Jonathan

Dear Johnathan,

I think you may have to chalk that one up to experience and pick up a new hard drive. :( If you don't have an actual reason for buying SATA, you may want to stick with PATA since its connectors are very durable and the PATA interface doesn't really slow the drive's performance down.

Best wishes and welcome to the Forums,

Sounds like you're in trouble for now, but if you decide to go the SATA Route again, and are going the western digital route, try this thing out, i must have unplugged my sata like 40 times during installation and it's still going strong :)

OK.

Consensus, of two anyway, seems to be that the drive is f****d. That means there would be nothing to lose by trying to jury-rig a connection between the remaining parts of the pin. Any sugestions?

Solder, superglue & a bit of safety pin?

Cheers
