Broken Receiver

My mom's stereo system's receiver turns on, off, and on again constantly every 5 seconds so something probably fried. It's probably not worth getting it fixed since the system's around 10 years old. I hardly known anything about stereo systems but if we were to spend $1000 or so maybe more i wouldn't know where to put it. It'd be helpful if you guys helped direct me.

some of the components:
adcom mosfet GFA-5800 --this is the amp or premamp?
California Audio Labs Compact disk player DX-1 --cd player
PSB Stratus Gold --two floorstanding towers
Adcom GTP-450 receiver/tuner --the broken receiver

any help would be appreciated

The GFA-5800 is an amp.

Is it just the GTP-450 that is turning on/off a lot?

(As in the amp is fine as far as you know)

I can get music out of it for 5 seconds then it turns off for a couple seconds and continues playing. The Amp is fine as far as i can tell there are led lights that show on/off power and only the receiver is shutting off.

Well I guess your options would be

-take the preamp in and have someone look at it = $$$?

-buy a similar adcom (or whatever) preamp used off ebay = ~$200?

-buy a new preamp or receiver of your choice = whatever you want to spend


How much does your mom care about audio? That's a nice system she has. Is she interested in just getting it working again with a similar replacement preamp?

I think for now she's going to get it looked at for a quick fix if possible. Since i'm gonna go to college for the next couple years i don't think she's gonna upgrade anything it anytime soon.

It might be something really simple that went wrong. I'd just recommend mentioning that she could get a used working one for under $200 if they for some reason think they're going to have to do serious work on it.

Hmm, better than the average stereo that's for sure. Getting the 450 replaced/repaired/upgrading to new receiver are your options. Good luck.
