my gf's iPod is making a sad face when she turns it on. It's a 5G 30GB model that she's probably had for a year or more. I googled the problem and ran through the suggestions, but it's back to making the sad face.

has anyone here sent their iPod off to a 3rd party repair shop? any recommendations?

thanks

Most likely its harddrive.

Did you try using hte iPod updater software?

I replaced the harddrive on a 3G 20GB before, after it died. Cost me 65 bucks.

Do you hear a clicking noise or anything else that leads you to think the hard drive is dead?
You can probably find a replacement HD and instructions. This will be the cheapest option.

I would personally check other solutions before repair. I had an ipod that did that and it was because i unplugged it without removing it from itunes first. I slammed it on a desk and it worked....yeah, violence solves most things.

format the drive using xp, reinstall/restore the drive.

no warranty? replace the drive or just pick up a used ipod......
