A buddy of mine dropped his phone and it shattered to smithereens. Anybody know of a place online that can fix it? Anybody here know how o do it? He can pay ya for the repair and shipping.

I'm guessing he can't get insurance or apple care because it's already broken.

Thanks!

With the 2G/3G/3GS you can buy replacement glass online for ~$5. That process requires a heat gun to remove the glass from the digitizer.

If he doesn't want to take that rout he can buy a digitizer with glass but that is significantly more expensive. This is what most on line places will replace and the cost is roughly $200.

He can also check out his credit cared terms and see if it is covered. Not that I condone such action but it might also be covered if "stolen".

I got the kit from ebay for $12 shipped. The kit even contained the small screwdriver. It took about 1.5 hour to repair it. I followed one of the online fixit walk-throughs on disassembling the iphone. The outer rubber o-ring got torn up, that was my only 'unhappy' moment about the repair. Be careful connecting the phone microphone/speaker back to the circuit board.

PS I need to read better the title. I fixed my 3G phone. I don't know if fixing 4 version is any different.

http://www.missionrepair.com is pretty good. Prices are pretty high but great service. They are located like 45 minutes from here and i had them fix my 3G dock connector, a few days after they repaired it the mic went out and they fixed that for free.

I believe Apple will replace it for $199.

Is it the front or back glass? Or both?

Take it to an Apple store, or call them

I did the $200 one time replacement through Apple.. they'll put a hold on your card and then send you a replacement phone and a box/shipping label for your broken phone. Ezpz.

First thing is take it to the Apple store. If they have any they made swap it out, as some have reported them doing so with the response "there's no way it should have broken like this on your so early". Those stories may be BS, but it's worth a visit if an apple store is close enough.

"Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultra-durable and more scratch resistant than ever," Apple says.

Ultra durable does not mean it's invulnerable.:p As the saying goes "Make it idiot-proof, and someone will make a better idiot."

Very true

And lets not forget what this "stronger" glass actually does. If they've truly made it stronger and HARDER (key word) then they've also made it more brittle. Which means that even though it may be more scratch resistant and also take more force to break than with the previous glass, when it DOES reach that critical force the glass is more likely to shatter rather than take a nasty scratch or divot.

more technical: a brittle material has no yield strength, which means it won't deform before it just breaks

So by making things stronger you've increased the chances of it cracking when surpassing the critical stress

You can tell Apple that you dropped it because you were trying not to "hold it wrong"...

My friend took your advice and went down to the apple store. He said they felt bad for him and gave him a new replacement phone free! Thanks everyone!!

Nice! Doesn't matter how you feel about Apple products, they're still the king of customer service

iphone 4 ...bring it to apple, they'll likely swap it out for free.

My buddy dropped his to the floor, and it shattered. They replaced it at no cost to him at all.

Exactly what happened to my buddy :). Pretty awesome if you ask me.

TangoJuliet,

What exactly did your friend say to the technicians? My iPhone 4 just cracked in my actual pocket - no drop involved. I'd like all the help I can get. If I get stuck without a replacement, I'm screwed.

So your saying apple is making better idiots? Sounds about right.
