I have a socket 370 board that needs fixed and I need help locating a part. it is a abit or asus board, cant remember, but that is irrelevant. A little black thingie came of. the markings say

GW21
5817

there are several more of these in other places on the board. I held the piece in place and the board would post, it does not without it. The problem is, the piece seems to have fallen on the floor and the floor was swept. (this happened while I was at work.) Where would I be able to locate this little tiny part so I could solder it back on? Do you think that it would work if I just closed the gap between the 2 points where this was located? it may have just been there to smooth out the voltage or something?

Thanks.

Hmm...your best bet is to bring the board into a Radio Shack and have them match up the part to the "several others" on the board. Sounds like a capacitor of some sort. Was it a larger-sized round tube? Black in color? Silver on the ends?

Good luck mate!

EDIT: Typos :)

actuallu, it is the size of a capacitor, but it is rectangular, with a grey strip at one end, and the connectors come out each end.

Now if you can't tell a diode (which is what that black thingie with the grey end is) from a capacitor, then maybe you leave your hands off trying to repair a mainboard ...

You need the exact same type of diode to replace what you broke. Tell either by reading the numbers on it, or by looking at another identical unit.

I can't break it any worse, it is already broken. Is this diode thingie important? Or can I just solder a piece of wire across the opening?

Edit: and I never said it was a capacitor.

exactly my point - if you can't tell a capacitor from a diode, and then continue to ask whether a diode can be replaced by wire, THEN LEAVE YOUR HANDS OFF IT.

Yes you can make it worse - maybe your next attempt starts a fire.
