I need to keep my endurance up, and sustain strength if not build, since I am not supposed to work out. Swimming sounds pretty good. I also like hockey, I can do light running and play road hockey, that may be helpful?

sounds to me like you just went to a free chiropractor.

jokes aside, go to the dr. it's not worth it to try and "tough" this out.

You should try reading the thread. He did.

Given what you wrote it's somewhat premature to be worried about losing your legs because of a back issue at this point.
I really want to get back into rugby again
Really? After cracking two vertebrae in your back you want to get back to Rugby? That reminds me of the time I got in a motorcycle accident and become a complete paraplegic. I finally healed (the only one ever to have done so). First thing I did was get back on the motorbike. Subsequently crashed and became fully paralyzed again. Darn bikes!

BTW bones like in the arm, heal no worries. Back? Be careful as hell, please, back injuries can plague a person for their entire life if they don't heal properly.

I am posting as I read the thread. I had not seen it before. I'm not really surprised at your results and that you didn't heal up after 8 weeks.

You probably want to avoid any contact sports such as hockey or something in which you can get plowed over or tweak/torque your body in a bad way. Of course, you should thus engage in triathlon, the best sport so far known to man.

Thanks, boy was i way off. as for sports, no heavy loads? martial arts sounds like a good way for you to keep in shape, maybe some "light" lifting as well?

What about back exercises and stretches? You should ask your doctor what is acceptable so you can strengthen your back. I would just workout/strengthen my back as much as I could (dips, pullups, pushups, squats etc.) because those muscles aren't just important in sports, but in day-to-day motions (lifting, picking up, bending over, etc.). It's just something to think about once you get older down the road.

Anyways, all the best and take care of yourself.

you could have fractured a vertebra. depending on the kind of fracture, there isn't really much that you can do but take it easy and wait for it to heal itself. i'd still go to the doctor and get an x-ray just to be sure. if the x-ray comes back negative, go see a chiropractor. if it comes back and you DO have a fracture, a chiropractor can't really do much for you.

go see a doctor. lower back injuries are notoriously difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat.

haha...

i have a patient right now. she's 75 years old next week. she has diabetes and had a laminectomy, bone graft put into L4/5, and a stimulator put into her back because there was some low back pain she'd been experiencing. ever since the surguries, she kept getting worse and worse (she got the surgeries 6 years ago). she ended up becoming wheelchair bound with an 82% on her oswestry questionaire (bed-ridden). her pain got so bad that she was contemplating suicide... daily, she had a 9/10 on a pain scale of 1-10. she'd seen 3 neurologists, 2 orthopedists, an acupucturist, a massage therapist, 4 physical therapists...

she came to me and i diagnosed her problem and treated her 3x week for a month. she can walk now... after only a month of treatment. her oswestry score is down to 42%. she can actually stand upright now... before, when i tried to have her stand if she was bent completely over at the waist looking straight at the ground with excruciating pain.

low back problems are EASY to diagnose. treating them is easy too once you have the correct diagnosis.

this... definitely. please take care of it as best you can. your back is one of the most important structures in your entire body. it's not invincible.
