Broken 360

I've got a 360 will be two years old this month and it seems my disc drive has gone bad. The door won't stay shut and is constantly opening.

Curious if anybody has any experience getting this repaired? I'm debating just picking up a new system if the price difference is not that much.

Basically I need to figure out what to do because as soon as I beat MGS4 it's time to pick up gears 2.

All Microsoft out of warranty repairs cost $99.

Also, you get a new one year warranty with it.

MS will charge $100 to replace the DVD-ROM and will give (I think) a 90 day warranty <-- nycxandy says it's 1 year, check the fine print to see which is right

You might Google to see if there are any repair steps you can try yourself.

You could also get a Jasper arcade with fresh warranty for $199, or less if you can find a hot deal.

If you pay the $99+tax you get the 1yr warranty. But at this point, with the Jasper deal you mentioned, there is really no point in paying MS for a repair IMO. Particularly given how little RRoD is left on it.

The last time I looked, the replacement DVD drive was about $60, that is probably the cheapest route.

My first choice would be sell it as is, and buy the Arcade.

if you get a replacement drive you have to put the firmware from the original on the new one with your key and serials, which can require special hardware and/or soldering and possibly a chip reader for hitachi drives

Yah sounds like I will be purchasing a Arcade model shortly and just popping in my old HD.

Haven't kept up with the hardware portion lately - any arcade sold in stores now is a Jasper model I'm assuming?

See the Jasper hunter thread and the AnandTech article for how to ID them.

Newegg has Jaspers (they include its new built-in memory in their product listing) , and people are getting Jasper arcades from Dell but any given brick-and-mortar store might have some dusty Falcon or Zephyr units to inflict on you.

From experience, MS re-ups your warranty for a year after a $99 repair. Personally, I'd rather pay the $99 for the MS repair, than $199 for a new machine and use the $100 savings on something else.

I've owned the thing for 2 years now. For an extra 100 I get a fresh console with much less risk of ring of death.

Srug at end of day were talking about spending an extra 100 which isn't a big deal. I just have a hard time thinking about repairing the machine when a new one has a better chance of not breaking anyway.

Not to mention an extra wireless controller, 256mb more storage, and five XBLA games. It's really not that bad of a deal if you're interested in those two things.
