WARNING: SPOILERS!
Saw it. Didn't really like it that much. Didn't really care that it was a homosexual relationship. Did care that there really wasn't a whole lot of relationship. It seemed like the hetero equivalent of a series of one night stands between two cheating spouses. It seemed to be sorely lacking emotional development between the main characters in the first half of the film. It wasn't until the last third of the movie or so that I felt that there really was something between them, and really more from Heath Ledger's side. Jake didn't really convey his emotional need for Ledger's character that well. I think it was a beautiful film aesthetically, with several subtle but excellent performances (Michelle Williams is worth mentioning). Heath Ledger's portrayal of a tortured soul is especially good, a ranchhand who can't come to grips with his past nor accept himself for what he is in the present and is destined to live an unhappy life bound to societal norms. But because I didn't really buy into the relationship that was at the core of the movie, I didn't really like the movie that much. It didn't move me.

BTW, Anne Hathaway once again tries to put her Disney past behind her in this film. Anna Faris also has a humorous bit part in the film.

One question though. Is it just Ennis' paranoia that causes him to see Jack getting beaten to death by an angry mob (as Jack's wife is explaining his death due to more mundane circumstances)? Or is it really what happened, just "glossed over" by the wife? I'm assuming that if Jack had in fact been killed by an angry mob, his wife could have cared less about fulfilling his last wishes.

i believe it is what actually happened to Jack... and I believe the wife arranged it.

I've actually seen both opinions (actually happened, Ennis' imagination). FWIW, Roger Ebert, in his review of the film, also appears to be not really be sure. Maybe it's purposely left vague like that?

The film "Brokeback Mountain" was originally pitched as an off-beat romance starring Mr. T and Chuck Norris. The sole reason the two legends declined the starring roles is because if Mr. T and Chuck Norris were to kiss, there would be new meaning to the word homosexual...it would mean "obligation" .

continuation of spoiler...->

I think after Ennis' divorce and the way Jake rushed all the way from texas just to be with him showed how much he wanted to be with Ennis. Especially how he was crying all the way back home.

I haven't decided whether I want to see it or not. It's all over the media, and I think that the commercial trailer for it is being shown twice every commercial break on some channels... so, dunno. :p

Never saw it, don't plan to.

Just because one doesn't get into a gay love story doesn't mean that someone is a hateful bigot. I fully support gay rights, gay marriage, gay adoption, etc. A gay love story just doesn't appeal to me, nor does seeing two guys kissing.

I don't want to see it. Not because of the homosexual thing (I know a couple gay guys, I have no problem with them). I don't want to see it because, as my roommate pointed out, it's a movie about two guys who go into the mountains and cheat on their wives. I personally can't see how people can support a movie where the central theme is adultry.
