I was trying to put the cpu in the socket 478, wasn't going in. i tried to force it and in doing so i bent few pins.

i was trying to straighten them up but i kinda pushed a little hard i guess, and broke one of the pins.

does anybody know if intel would warrant that damage.

thanks.

Good luck. You could always call and ask...all they can do is laugh.

The stories I've heard say they are pretty lenient, but next time don't be such a 'tard.

BTW, exactly how did you bend pins on a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) Socket anyway? What did I tell you about working on your PC after 1/2 bottle of Vodka, hmm? J/K

As stupid as it sounds, I had a hell of a time installing the 1800+'s in my Tiger MP. The TBirds I had pulled out would drop in under their own weight, but the XP's simply wouldn't go in. The pins appeared to be straight, but they wouldn't drop down. Took me over an hour of gently rocking them into place to install those two CPUs, & I was perfectly sober. A friend of mine had the same thing with his XP's + Tiger MP.

So although it usually works flawlessly, sometimes it can be a pain in the ass.

Still no excuse to use force though.

No it is not covered. This unfortunately is your loss.

But the warranty usually doesn't cover. SEUMs. Stupid End User Mistakes. Sorry, I'm just being an ass. :p Intel is usually pretty lenient. Call em up and explain to them what happened. Mention how much you love Intel products, etc, etc. You'd be surprised what brown-nosing will get you sometimes. :D

Warranty=manufacturing defect. The pins being placed out of spec would be the only scenario I could think of where this might be covered.

<< no
The processor is dead. You just got a $100 lesson.
>>

think of it this way if it makes you feel any better, processors were 500 bucks a pop not too long ago, and they werent even top of the line at the time. so a $100 lesson is better than a $500 lesson, same learning experience and a lot less damage on your wallet.

<< dman, that sucks. :|

i just lost 150 bucks. :|

Not necessarily.

Call them up. Don't lie to them, just tell them what happened.

They might decide to be generous.

As others have said, the worst that can happen is them laughing at you.

Name your price for my new keychain.

have you tried the chip since you broke the pins? chances are it might still work because not all the pins are used..

the one that i broke is at very end.

i put the chip in the msi 845 ultra mobo. the four lights on the d bracket are all red, which tells the cpu is damaged. :(

Congrats on Golden, and sorry for your loss.
Thought for the future, the best way to fix the pins is with a #5 mechanical pencil without the lead in it.
