Broadwell-E 10 Core Costs $1723

Looking on revenue and profit. If Intel was to go no profit. All you get would be a 20% cut on all CPUs. Meaning this CPU would still be 1400$.

You're not looking at the silly corporate benefits and wages and stock options etc that employees get.

Bring the median total (including all compensation) salary to a less ridiculous level and the majority of the costs are eliminated.

Remember that in the tech industry the means of production are the engineers etc.

That's what "Tech Industry" means. If we are talking about the fabs directly then we would be talking about Manufacturing Heavy Industry as apposed to "Tech Industry".

Can also completely lop off the cancer that accompanies capitalism of "marketing."

Remove all marketing expenses outright, explicit and implicit, and you will lower costs massively there as well.

Better Zen performs well, or SKL-E will cost an arm.

(the rumor mill don't help, it says Skylake Xeon haves a big architecture revamp over Broadwell, and SKL-E are based on mainstream Xeons).

I still remember in the Broadwell-E thread some forum members laughing to people who were posting "leaked prices" for the 6950x of 1700-1800$ if I remember correctly, saying that those were just placeholder prices etc

Fun times.

Those "leaks" in hind-sight were quite obviously marketing feelers using the leak as a kind of "focus group."

They obviously concluded from that exercise that people would be perfectly happy and willing to pay that much, so that's how much they now plan to charge for certain.

Well, the problem with Zen is that it will have to be fast enough to compete with 8 core BW-E in order to push the prices down. If 8 core Zen competes mainly with hex core BW-E, Intel already has a "cheap" chip there, the 6800K.

But I agree, very disappointing prices. They should drop one of the hex cores, move the 8 core to 600 to 700 and put the 10 core at 1000.00.

The very fact that BW-E is priced the way it is indicates that Intel competitive analysis and corporate espionage has determined that Zen will have zero impact on BW-E, which either means that Zen isn't coming out anytime soon, and/or that Zen sucks. We will know for sure when Intel "leaks" Skylake-E prices, which will come out far closer to Zen's rumored launch window.

They cant do that due to the Xeons. The HEDT shows again what it is, a server bastard line that have to follow those rules. AMD would do the exact same.

Is the price of the latest and greatest I guess, my X5680 cost tens times what I bought it for at one time, and about that much.

There is no way it costs $20 to build. Not even close.

Yea, it costs them zero to "build", because they are server rejects.

Seriously though, a big part of the cost is R@D and validation, etc., obviously. And I can see a price premium for the 10 core (although 1700 is a bit much) because it is a niche top of the line product. Biggest disappointment is the 8 core not coming down from 1000.00 in order to encourage upgrading to more than 6 cores, especially since it is no longer a top of the line product.

Why would AMD want to push prices down? They are eyeing the sweet margin dollars and want some of that action themselves.

They also want to gain back market share. Like I said, if Zen is most competitive against 6 core HEDT, it will not have much effect on prices because Intel already has a 400.00 chip there, and I dont see Zen being priced much less than that. However, if Zen is close in performance to 8 core HEDT, they they could surely price it attractively in the 700.00 range. The price for the 8 core is simply absurd. 2.5 times the cost of lowest hex core for 1/3 more cores????

But I do agree there is too much hype in the Zen thread about super low prices and competitive performance. But there is certainly a very big gap in intel's pricing between the 400.00 hex core and the 1000.00 8 core. If performance is good enough, Zen could find a niche there and put some pressure on prices.

Oh c'mon, if that was true then they would go bankrupt by selling 6800K at 400$. It's the same exact die!

There's a fat 50% extra on that deca core that really shouldn't be there, but hey AMD and NVIDIA can have their 1500$ card and someone still buys them so why not?

People who care of money will just go with 6, 8 cores. People who need more than this can easily check 12-22 cores offerings in the Xeon line.

BTW 99% reason for this price is this chip: E5-2687W. 12 cores and similar clocks, sells for about 2000$. If there was an unlocked 10 core at 1000, but even 1500$ it would be an hard sell...

You remember wrong: some members didn't believe the $1500 rumored price. Funny indeed.

AMD will sell Zen server chips for as much as they can. Price war in a server segment is pretty much nonsense. Because perf/watt is the only thing that matters, winner takes all, price is close to irrelevant. And this will reflect their "HEDT" chips too.

That is true. But if you wish to move profit around, other products will suffer. So what chips would get what? No discount for some, huge for others? That's why I just used a cut for everything roughly. Equal terms for all.

Using a 5930K @ 3.7GHz here. No plans to change. If I did it'd be the cheapest hexa core, maybe a standard i7 Kaby Lake. Was just under $700 here, prices have gone up to under $900 since I bought it.

Oh dear sweet baby Cthulhu. This thing had better either be a total worldbeater in perf/watt, or come down in price like massively. This is almost FX-9000-series-level hubris here.

Expensive 10 cores new tech is one thing, but for me it's tempting to go moar cores with older tech as prices fall..

Well worth the $300

If only we had any mobo manufacturers with the balls to enable overclocking on it.
