Broadband question cable vs. wireless???

Forgiven

Member
I currently have a wireless connection that will give me between 256-300K/sec up and down but cable is offering up to a 1M down with only 128 K upload....would the download override the slow uploads when playing games etc on the web???? Don't want to go backwards on my online gaming but I would like to go cable. HELP

B.T.W. I cannot get DSL here...Dedicated T1 is too much and Satellite is too close to what I have...Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean, but 1mb down and 128k up is fine for online gaming. You should have no problems playing.

You do NOT want to game on scatellite, so don't even consider that.

If gaming is your only concern I'd stick with what you have now, assuming you find the latency acceptable. I'd much rather have a 256/256 connection for gaming than a 1000/128 connection.

No games I know of would come close to saturating a 1mb/128k line.

Hell, my old 64kb ISDN line NEVER got saturated while gaming.

It is called prairieinet.com and they specialize in rural area's close to schools or the like and have a 4 mile radius. It is essentially a 2.4 Gig phone tapping into their system that will do 256 each way.

Your wireless is not a duplex connection most likely, 802.11b equipment can only send or receive at once, it cannot do both at the same time without 2 radios so its probably an improvment to have cable as long as the cable company is good. Wireless is, in my opinion, currently the best option if you have no other options for an ISP. If you can get cable or dsl at a good price from a good isp, I think you get less for your money from wireless

Well it really depends on the technology they use, most of it isn't full duplex. If it is 802.11b, it is half duplex (linked for example)

As to how much of a difference this makes, 'eh, but like I said on the whole with both ISP's being good, I think you get more bang for your buck from cable than any other form of broadband

i think you guys are confusing stuff,

I dont think this guy is talking about sattilite, i think he is talking about wireless, on the ground
its offered here, and i would get it but i cant get a straight line of sight

anyway, when they say 1mb down, they really mean 90-110 kbs max,

id stick with wireless
